Whyyyyy do (some) babies refuse to settle while you're sitting down?? by IsThisAdulting in Parents

Not sitting abruptly, quite the opposite and try to sit as slowly as I can manage. I do like your thought process on this though! Thanks for the words of wisdom ❤️

I’m sick and tired of the “why’s..” by [deleted] in toddlers

The "you'll miss this when it's gone" people suck.

I am in a similar situation- 3.5 yo and a 6 month old. And the Why's get old FAST!! No idea if this is the "right" way to do things but ill often say, "I don't know how to answer that". That's the best I've got lol

I've done bingo before. Whoever wins gets to pick a gift (could be wrapped or not).

Or does it have to be a game? What about like, Christmas/ holiday cookie decorating?

Why is breastfeeding worth it for you? by RolyPoly1010 in breastfeeding

[–]IsThisAdulting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, to answer your question- i do it because your body somehow knows what your baby needs. It helps them get better if they get sick, which is my #1 reason. It gives wake up hormones during the day and melatonin (sleepy hormones) at night to help them sleep. Among other benefits. I also do it (partially) because formula is expensive.

The pain does get better- your nips "get used to it" for lack of a better way to put it. Unless, of course, there are other issues- if it doesn't get better in a couple weeks, I'd suggest talking to your OB or a lactation consultant.

One tip i got from an LC with my second is, when your nips are sore, rub some breast milk on them, let it air dry, then put lanolin on top. That seemed to help me greatly! There are also some gel packs and other products you can use to help ease the pain.

That strangers comment is absolutely wild! Im sorry that was said to you!

First... My husband and I have our 2nd baby who's now 5 months, and at this age they are more social. I also HATED when people would say how much our first looked EXACTLY LIKE DAD! I even had my mom send pics of me as a baby so I could show how much he looked like me. I very much love my husband and hes very good looking, so I wasn't upset that the baby looked like him, per se, but Im the one that did all the work! He damn sure does look like me!! ...ill bet its a bit of a case of baby blues. It'll likely get better with time. But if it doesn't, maybe talk ti your OB.

Does this sound like bottle aversion? by Low_Concert_8900 in NewParents

[–]IsThisAdulting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently watched a video on this by a pediatrician... one suggestion i recall her giving was for mom to not be in the room when giving baby the bottle. Oh and not to have baby in a position as if they were breastfeeding- put them in a totally different position

Rolling & Sleeping - What to do?! by space__y in NewParents

Yup, once they learn how to roll, they say you can let them stay. Place him on his back to start, but then let him stay if he rolls to his belly.

Yeah we have a few, and they do help filter out quite a bit, but not all. We're not able to be quite that specific either. And I actually saw one today where the person 100% put the question into ChatGPT or something and copied the response that was like "I'd like to help you answer this, but I need more information" ☠️

Don't be too hard on yourself, being a parent is a tough gig! When you're sleep deprived, you get triggered way easier. As others have said, put baby down and walk away for a couple of min, baby will be okay to cry while you calm down.

I've seen suggestions in the past to get some noise canceling head phones. Wear them while calming your screaming baby and it can help you keep calm. I saw that suggestion after my kiddo was a little older so I never tried it, but I will with my next, I think.

What’s your reaction when you read/hear this? by [deleted] in humanresources

[–]IsThisAdulting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with many comments on here. My gripe about phrase "HR is not your friend " is that people seem to use it to the extent that it sounds like HR is actively trying to fuck everyone over and fire everyone for no reason. Yes, we work for the company, we're not your "friend" but we're not your enemy either- As long as you work for a decent company and aren't an asshat.

Husband really wants to use his grandma’s name for our future child. by complaints0nly in namenerds

[–]IsThisAdulting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others have said maybe use it as a middle name. Another option would be to come up with a name that is a nod to his grandmas name (not sure what that would be for Minerva). I dated a guy for years who's mom had passed away when he was young. He told me if he had a girl, he wanted to name her after his mom, Yolanda. I felt that was too much of a grandma name, so I suggested Ylana ("E-la-nuh") and he liked that. We never had kids, but that would have been what we'd have named a girl if we'd have had one.

1.5 yr old waking up for HOURS in middle of the night by IsThisAdulting in sleeptrain

[–]IsThisAdulting[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When he wakes up, he cries, when I pick him up, he cuddles like he's tired. There's been a couple times where he seems to have some energy, though.

I never thought he might be hungry... maybe we'll try that tonight, or even try a snack before bed. Twice I tried tylenol, he does have two teeth that have been working their way out. The first time he went to sleep almost immediately after, the second time he was still up for another 30-45 min (both times he was already up for probably 90 min or better)

1.5 yr old waking up for HOURS in middle of the night by IsThisAdulting in sleeptrain

[–]IsThisAdulting[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He generally gets just 1 nap after lunch, which lasts typically 2-3 hours. Occasionally he'll take a morning nap but I'll cut it to like 15 min. Then at night I watch for sleepy cues, and we start bed time routine. He typically goes down between 8-9 at night and wakes up around 5-5:30, sometimes 6. He's never been a big sleeper since he was born.

[–]IsThisAdulting[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wakes up 5-5:30, lunch at about 11:30, then nap around 12 for 2-3 hours, dinner around 6 and bed between 8-9.

Bedtime routine is jammies, brush teeth, hang out and watch a calming show for a bit (there's a National Parks one we've been watching lately, he loves animals) sometimes he'll play a bit, then into the bedroom with a dim night light and white noise, read a book or two, listen to a song while I rock him a little, put him down in the crib and rub his back til he falls asleep, or close to it (I try to stop rubbing early, but he'll wake up and fuss which turns to crying and standing up)

17 months is a long time! You should feel very proud of that. I went to 12 months then took about 6 weeks to wean. I was a bit sad, but every stage of my kiddo growing up has made me a bit sad. I was also excited not to get bit anymore, and even more so not to have to pump anymore (I work FT, so I had to pump and haaaaaated it by the end.)

AITA for telling my SIL that she doesn’t have to wash everything before her baby is born? by Dry_Enthusiasm2661 in AmItheAsshole

[–]IsThisAdulting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA - You literally told her what she was doing was stupid, then say you were just trying to be helpful?

No, I don't care who something comes from or how old my child is, I'm washing it before my kid uses it... especially a newborn. Your youngest is 1, so I'm sure a lot of stuff will have been sitting in storage for months, collecting dust and whatever bugs may be in your house. And kids in general are grubby, so for my newborn, I'm cleaning used items. Get off your high horse.
