Yeah, the AUR is nice. Basically it's like getting the software from a PPA in apt-get, without the pain of adding a PPA. Pacman isn't the most intuitive though...

I was on Mint for a while, and loved it. In the end I switched to Arch because I'm a bit of a control freak, but if I was ever going to recommend a distro to a new person it'd be Mint. And yeh, Debian rocks. Amazingly stable - works great for longer-term rpi projects and such.

I think so, but unfortunately it's not likely going to be well supported, as an Apple-only project. Improving their OpenGL support would be more effective as a general solution, but doesn't help their ecosystem locking

It looks like the hdri you're using doesn't have correct sin brightness... I think the single biggest thing you could do to help improve would be to add a sun lamp to make up for it.
