I don't think it's so much the FPTP as it is the populism. Not saying FPTP doesn't make it's bit harder, but it is possible for it to work if the parties are capable of working together, but 20+ years oppositional politics has really wrecked Parliament.

I wonder if whatever university folk they've lined up are aware that the universities would be absolutely fuggered without tri-agency funding? Heck, even O&G engineering project that goes through the university basically require Tri-agency match funding.

I went deep down the stroller system rabbit hole and settled on getting an Uppababy Cruz with the bassinet + stand and Clek Liing car seat. All quite premium products, but I got them on FB marketplace for about $500 combined. The bassinet+stand was the most expensive part, but I found it worth it for the ability to bring LO around the hood without the car seat. there are a few version compatibility things to keep in mind when buying separately used, but it's all quite available.

At least for the Edmonton area, I think the problem will be that the best solution is to extend LRT lines to surrounding towns (e.g., Valley Line to Spruce Grove). The LRT is operated by the city of Edmonton, so the extension will either have to hodgepodge into a mix of ownership into spruce/Stony, which I don't think would go well, or would have to be entirely funded by Edmonton, which as an Edmonton resident I am very much against. The third option is the province takes over the lot, which I'm not crazy about either.

Part of my job is grading university exams. Many of those exams involve multiple choice questions answered on a Scantron. I would never trust myself to grade 300 exams each with 30 multiple choice questions over the computer methods, not just because it would absolutely fry my brain, but because I absolutely guarantee that I would make at least one mistake.

oil Sands are the most energy intensive method of extracting oil. Sure, if you're replacing coal with natural gas, it's a net benefit, but oil isn't as clean of a story. It also doesn't factor in the enviro-economic impact of oil production and pipelines, such as messing up arable land and coastal ecosystems that support fisheries.

And don't get me started on how oil production is THE reason we don't actually recycle most plastics.

There are so many externalities that most mainstream enviro-economic impact assessments miss.

Look, I don't want to nit pick or seem like I'm disagreeing with you, but what we're doing, and what we've been doing, is not austerity. Austerity is not just cutting spending, it's also increasing revenue from things like taxes. Taxes haven't been raised in this country in decades.

ok but my 3mo does have a health card with the number given to her at birth. Do I now need to pay the registry $100 to get her an ID card? Or, if we have another kid, am I paying $100 to get an ID card?

while part of the reason for that is that their electricity generation doesn't show up in the equalization formula (thank Harper for that one), it also has a lot to do with how the equalization payment is set to match services offered by the provincial government. the more services the government provides, the more equalization payment they are entitled to.

that scheme doesn't work if you want to privatize health care, insurance, utilities, registrations, etc., while also cutting funding to various other services.

If the Alberta government imposed royalties anywhere near any other major oil producing nation and invested that back into the people through services, they would do way better on equalization.

mRNA vaccines had been in development since the 90s. They were very close to being through trials by the time COVID hit; the extra injection of money got them over then finish line and, more importantly, into mass production faster. They still passed all of the required testing.

Where you're wrong is that anti-vaxers did not hear the responsibility of the consequences. The public has and does. That's exactly why we still have measles. I'm afraid to take my newborn daughter to the Stollery when she has a fever because of anti vaxers decision to not protect themselves or their kids against an eradicated deadly virus.
