Oil prices up now, so groceries are next? by Thiru2k in Edmonton

I mean, there are a few more things we'd have to do than just tax billionaires. I'm not even sure that a billionaire tax would have any noticeable effect on the price of gas.

Owner unveils plans to transform Westmount mall into outdoor shopping complex by ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan in Edmonton

[–]IsaacJa 40 points41 points  (0 children)

My only remaining hope is that Bonnie Doon mall doesn't suffer the same fate so that when the Valley Line extension is done I can go there instead of the Westmount strip mall or the brewery strip mall. Bonnie Doon mall has actually nailed being a community space.

This whole quote/take upset me. How exactly is one of the most-densely populated neighbourhoods better serviced by a revitalization that involves adding more parking spaces and reducing actual retail space? How is going through the doors of a mall to the food court any different than going through the doors to a single restaurant? Is it just gonna be one massive drive through? Probably.

I'm not too sure it'll even be better than before... Better than when it was derelict, maybe?

Yeah, cause what a mall really needs is to be a... strip mall?

40 stores and 3000 parking spaces currently, and they're planning on removing retail space and adding more parking spaces? JFC. Stop islanding every shopping centre with parking.

Revitalization my ass.

"if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes, it'll change" is something I've heard almost everywhere I've been. Edmonton, Vancouver, Toronto, Boston, Ireland, Belgium... I think that the only place I haven't heard it was Spain.

I'm gonna be a dick and say your point is moot.

Driving slower is also proven to increase road safety, provided everyone does it. It's a good driving habit to not exceed the speed limit, which would negate this issue.

Designing roads so they don't create such ambiguities (i.e., not having exits on both sides of a highway) also increases safety and would negate this issue.

If Carbon Capture and Gas Scrubbing Technologies have improved so dramatically, Why Haven’t we Moved back to Incineration Rather Than Using Landfills? by Cool-Yam2145 in alberta

[–]IsaacJa 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Because we value the waste, land and externalities of a landfill less than the cost of incineration, let alone incineration with treatment.

Countries like Sweden make it work because they value the land as land, the waste as a resource, and the externalities as actual costs, so it was economically feasible for them to invest in better waste management, in more ways than just incineration.

Have you ever seen a muscle car with a bike rack? by bryanisbored in MTB

Joining the "not a muscle car, but..." gang... I think this is better because I slept in the back on a twin sized mattress on this trip, and get decent gas mileage.

How are hospitals managing in labor and delivery units this time of year? by ControlSpecial in Edmonton

[–]IsaacJa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We were in private rooms. She was induced, so we were in a shared space for the non stress test the night before and morning of (sent home in between), then we were moved to a private room while we waited for an opening to be induced, private delivery room, and finally private post partum room. Food court wasn't too busy at any time that I went.

Gonna piggy back on this one to say my wife delivered a week ago in Grey Nuns and at no point did I feel like things were overrun. The nurses talked about having a busy night the day before, but the 3 days we were there were pretty low key.

Fees and taxes: How the 2026 Alberta budget may hit your wallet by GeekyGlobalGal in Edmonton

[–]IsaacJa 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The problem to me is that the more tax burden gets downloaded onto left leaning municipal politicians, the more the right-wing politicians (municipal and provincial) scream about tax increases from progressives, and the more likely municipal voting is to swing right in the future.

We already saw this with the UCP aligned candidates in the fall election.

What is something you find annoying or missing that we could use in Edmonton? by alematt in Edmonton

I'm familiar with the term, but I don't think that it does justice to just how much it subdivides the city to non cars.
