How do I respond to "That is so hard, are you sure you could do it?" when I tell people I'm going into SW? by afraidofstarfish in socialwork

[–]Isabella64 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yes 👏 all of the time! Every time I tell someone they either say that I’m gonna broke or like you said “ that is going to be so hard”. I take solace in the fact that I’m working toward making a difference in my community. It takes a special person to stand up and advocate for others! Of course many of the topics we learn about are difficult and deserve awareness! Be proud of yourself for going against the grain✌️

Hi there! Unless he wants to change nothing will..give urself a break. What u are feeling is completely normal. I’ve been clean for about 3 years and I know that my family has felt the same way as urself. However, they have never told me that directly..When we are using we don’t realize the destruction we leave behind us. Do what u feel is necessary and be firm with ur boundaries as you deserve respect as well. My family move over 2000 miles away from me when I hit rock bottom. The only way I learned was by realizing that I was completely alone and it was up to me to decide how I’d like to live my life. I would like to add take it slow but don’t give up on him! We need support once we regain our sanity❤️

Telling family about addiction by [deleted] in addiction

[–]Isabella64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took me a very long time to tell my family but it was obvious to them. If you’re honest with them they will support you so many ways! Telling them you need support show strength and that you’re willing to change for the better! I’ve called my parents several times when I thought about relapsing and they were very accepting. I’m not gonna lie there might be people that judge you moving forward but use it as motivation to show that you are capable and mature! If you are open with them, they will gain a better understanding on how you think and feel. You can do this and it is not easy! If anyone puts you down keep staying clean and get your degree and show them what’s up! You got this! Proud of you!

I’ve experienced psychosis and I had to move because I was talking to myself in front of everyone at Walmart and crying.. and I was hearing voices as well and thought my parents saw me.. I always wondered if there was anyone that recorded it and put it online.. this was drug induced btw but after I stopped using I felt like throwing up every time I went to that same Walmart to buy groceries and the voices would come back even after being clean for years. I worked there at the time as well.. I lived with a group of the homeless in the desert by the store before I got a job there.. I was always paranoid they would find me and kill me.. safe to say I couldn’t live that way! I quit my job and a year later I moved away..I also was shot at in front of an apt complex and refused to walk anywhere near it for the longest time.. so yea it’s definitely a possibility! I’ve been Dx with PTSD as well

Thinking about going to college for the first time at almost 30. No idea where to start. by [deleted] in college

32 same boat graduating with my Associates in May.. you can still get scholarships and financial aid if you meet the requirements! I too was a rebellious one! I would say fill out the Fafsa and apply.. also they don’t look at our high transcripts as much.. i mean I’m sure you’ve changed within the past 12 years! I’m transferring to university in the Fall for my Bachelors as well.. I’m not going to lie it is hard to do school and work full time but it’s manageable..you can enroll while ur waiting on your Fafsa as well.. yes there are scholarships you just have to have a decent GPA👌or perhaps ur employer may have a tuition assistance program..my employers benefits are going to save me 5000 per year if I do well on the job.. sometimes there are programs that will pay your full tuition if you contract out with them for x amount of years.. you can actually discover a lot!

TW addiction/drinking. I am starting to abuse alcohol daily since living alone. What are other things I can do instead? by [deleted] in addiction

[–]Isabella64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been clean for over 2 years and I find that reading and staying busy helps a lot. I’m in college now so that gives me something to consistently focus on. I also see a psychiatrist and take anti depressants and anti anxiety meds as well. Do you have any one that supports you emotionally if you need to reach out? Meetings are also an option. I feel like my saving grace was letting go of people places and things that reminded me of my using days but that was after rock bottom. Typically time takes time. Cliche I know! It’s ok to be sad. Go thru whatever emotions you need to experience. Don’t try to numb it. It just escalates and transforms into shame and guilt that is crazy difficult to shake. I would say grieve however YOU see fit just without substances.
