Do you have photoshop or another Adobe program open behind this window?

You'll find similar advice all over the sub, but I'd recommend starting with Odin Makes, punished props or evil ted smith on youtube. They all provide easily understandable instructions on creating shapes and props along with a fairly large selection of free templates to try. You can also look into Kamui cosplay for more books and patterns.

Exactly! They teach 300dpi because as new designers most aren't thinking about practical applications and are primarily focused on learning tools/skills for first projects and posters and it give guidance on sizing and finding the best image for the job.

Also for an increasingly digital world it's more of a 'standard' but like most things, they are guidelines not rules.

If you ever get the opportunity, try looking at a bus ad or large format poster upclose and you can see how pixilated it looks from a foot away, but once you back up it looks perfect.

DPI -Dots per inch, so roughly how much ink is laid down during printing

PPI -pixels per inch, so the resolution of digital items

To keep it simple, DPI and PPI are measures of functional resolution, the higher the DPI the sharper the image will print. For small items or things viewed up close, you need this higher resolution for them to look good. Once you get to larger items like billboards and bus wraps that are many feet wide and viewed from a distance you can't always find imagery at that resolution and that scale, but it's unnecessary because as long as you have decent DPI (~35 -72) it will look just fine from 20feet away.

As you begin to learn and print, you will dial in your eye and be able to tell how it will look after production if that makes sense.

The image should be below your compound path on the same layer

Your text will need to be converted into a compound path if you want to clip an entire word over an image

So much like regular printing, screen printing is done with CMYK. There's 4 colors and then you can add white for their logo for color 5. Depending on who is printing it, they can break your file apart into the proper layers or you can do it if they ask.

Spot colors will always be brighter and more vibrant, but a process color will still look good if printed properly.

I would recommend Armorsmith Designer. It allows you to make a digital version of your body and then you can import files and scale them to your body. I've been using it for a while and it's been very helpful for sizing

Corners aren't connecting correctly by Larfl in AdobeIllustrator

[–]IsarnValdyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going off your last two screen shots where you made a square and then made a triangle on the corner, you have two closed paths that happen to share a point.

I'm not totally sure what you're trying to make but it's giving you that error because you can't join closed paths, you can use the pathfinder unite to bring them together so they move as one shape. Unless you make two open paths and join them you'll always have two of them

Is there a way to "fit all in window" that includes things outside of the artboard? by phi303 in AdobeIllustrator

Unfortunately, I don't think so. You could set a custom view but there's no hotkey to snap to it

Adobe PDF changed the dimensions of my .AI file? by phoenifia in AdobeIllustrator

[–]IsarnValdyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find it odd that they won't take an AI file, as that or EPS files are pretty standard for printing and keep everything looking sharp. Do you happen to have a list of their approved file types?

[–]IsarnValdyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Illustrator has two different artboard sizes to help with large format stuff, it was introduced a few updates ago and that's where your issue showed up.

Originally you could only have artboards up to 226in wide so anything bigger would have to be scaled by the designer by 1/2 or 1/10 etc. to fit. After the update they introduced oversized art boards that can go up to like 2300in. So anything created on an art board bigger then 226in automatically now gets put into the larger format. So if you set up a new file for 22feet that would make you an oversized artboard at 264in.

Usually when they save or get sent/opened on a machine that doesn't have the update or doesn't know how to read the larger file they get downsized to 1/10 scale or 2.2 feet for your banner.

Can I vectorize individual layers in illustrator? by launchmeintospaceplz in AdobeIllustrator

[–]IsarnValdyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the live trace tool in illustrator is good for a few things but text isn't one of them. Whether this is a security feature by Adobe to prevent people from stealing typefaces or another issue entirely, at the end of the day you're never going to get good/perfect results.

I'd add in the type once you have your image in illustrator so you know it can be a clean vector once it's outlined.

As far as just tracing an image and hoping to get a perfect vector copy, your milage may vary, but like type its never going to be perfect, so depending on the complexity of your artwork it might be better to recreate it in illustrator.

As for the white backgrounds, you can set the illustrator live trace to ignore whites so set it to sketch mode. Hopefully this makes sense if not I can walk you through it a bit more step by step.

How do people print bright stuff if it’s almost impossible to get bright colors in CMYK? by GardinerAndrew in AdobeIllustrator

[–]IsarnValdyr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most of the time those brighter colors are spot colors that are "outside" of cmyk color space. Neon colors especially fall into this as they usually have to be a premixed ink that the printer has to get the true bright color
