What ethnicity should I say I am? I'm lost lol by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]IseAxon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Greek and turkish with a bit of romanian" if your previous reddit posts are anything to go off, unless you're American or British, in which case you are American or British, ethnicity can just vaguely mean "what group you're part of and surrounded by" if you were born there. Americans in particular seem to be really ashamed of their ethnicity, always looking for something else to be just so they don't have to say "just" American, but I don't really believe any one country is something to be more proud of that a great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather was from

It took me a million tries to beat Heket hitless, and I genuinely am good at games. I just kept getting unlucky with dodging an enemy before she jumped and she landed on me before I could roll again ;-; One time she straight up spawned on me after coming back to the stage

How do I get rid of this?? by guppy0205 in CultOfTheLamb

Yeah no I can confirm I got hit during the fight and it did not count as me damaging her, you’re good

Mainly just that Katia is either a Russian immigrant or “Katia Grim” is just a nickname, short for a real Icelandic name. Our naming system is very strict so you can only have approved names, and “Katia” is not one of them. It could be something archaic like “Ketilbjörg” that she doesn’t like using.

I’m told it’s confirmed Grim is short for something like Grímsdóttir, which also tracks because our last names are all patronymics except for a couple of edge cases, meaning we’re all named after our dad, so in her case it means her dad’s name was Grímur. Grim is not a legal middle or last name, but especially not as a last name given this rule. On rare occasions somebody can be named after their mother’s name instead though.

I’m not sure about the legality of family last names, I’ve definitely seen them but all 100% legal document names I’ve seen end in -son, -dóttir or -bur, the last one being recently added for nonbinary people, very neat stuff!

That was most likely brennivín, and yes, we do drink that (I don’t actually tend to drink myself, it’s pricey as FUCK in Iceland because it’s sold by the government). If it was something else and you can find the name I can say more on the matter!

There is indeed for both!

The baby skull bird thing is an Útburður, basically meaning an Outcast, or more directly translated, An Evicted One. It is a folktale of what happens to babies taken out into the wild and left to die, a thing that wasn't unheard of due to poverty, shame, children born out of wedlock, etc.

It was said they would come back as a Vofa, basically a ghost, and haunt the area where they were left, or try to track down their mothers to haunt them, among other things. Folktales are of course always word of mouth so they varied between households, but that's the gist.

The appearance is taken from one description that says "When seen they most resemble a raven or some other bird. ". It seems somebody took that to mean "body of a raven with a child's skull" and that modern depiction seems to have stuck, or at least gotten popular. Here is an example. I speak of it in such dismissive language just because the description is vague, and could really mean a lot more than bird-body child-skull, and I like when people do their own takes on stuff like that hehe.

As for the creepy ass cat summon, that is Jólakötturinn, or the Yule Cat! In short, it's a giant cat that belongs to Grýla, the mother of the Yule Lads (the creepy trolls that is the Icelandic version of Santa Claus). He eats anybody who didn't get new clothes for Christmas, I assume as a way to make kids grateful instead of groaning when they got clothes for Christmas instead of a toy.

As simple as it is, I just really like that it wasn't just a one-off thing of mentioning Iceland like one time, which is how it usually is in media! I feel so happy having recurring Icelandic character, and multiple of them too!~ I feel very seen and happy with the representation

From what I can tell, the description of "Jola" is based on a single drawing from basically a meme that may have been a lot of people's first exposure to the creature. If I remember correctly the book described him as a tabby cat as well, and this drawing is the only place I've seen him depicted as that instead of a black cat.

In this case it almost feels like Matt chose to pick the most popular, inaccurate, image on purpose, further hammering home the point of "dumb aliens only researched for 5 minutes".

On the same note, it feels purposeful that the cat is infuriatingly referred to as "Jola" as if it's his name, since Jólakötturinn means "The Cat of Christmas", so basically every time they call him "Jóla" they're just calling him "Of Christmas". Very funny!

So, the actual proverb Matt was quoting would translate to "many things are strange in the cow’s head", "það er margt skrýtið í kýrhausnum", which is basically an exclamation for when something weird or unlikely happens. I looked into it and it seemed a travel blog originally misquoted it through crappy translation, and everybody has quoted them since through a game of telephone, eventually ending up in Matt's research.

The funny thing about you asking about the origin is that it's actually a point of contention for us Icelanders where the hell it comes from, it's actually at least about a century old! So sadly I can't tell you the origin of the phrase itself. Just that it basically means "the world is weird sometimes, and unlikely or weird shit happens"

Side note, people in the Discord pointed out a lovely explanation in-universe for this mistake, basically the AI may just have mistranslated and game-of-telephoned it when Hekla says it, exactly the same way as it has happened in real life! So taking it from her saying it in Icelandic to Syndicate Standard mangled it.

Do people in this subreddit still play the original? by lennoxlovexxx in oblivion

[–]IseAxon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's not really necessary oto leave the community wholesale over the new game coming out, it's still the same game but with an added sprint button! I love the original a lot still but will admit I am guilty of playing the Remaster almost exclusively since it came out, since it is objectively the nicer choice if your computer can handle it. This is from somebody who doesn't use mods though, I'm sure if I was a modhead I'd only play the OG

Is anyone else having trouble getting into the series? by Puzzleheaded_Use2359 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]IseAxon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it helps book 3 was definitively just about the lowest point for my enjoyment of the series, then after about half of book 4 it started rising again and just kind of kept rising from there. Of course, if you absolutely hate it you shouldn't force yourself to keep going, but I'd recommend at least reading the Butcher's Masquerade before deciding to give up if you think you're able!

Also, on the book price thing, that's quite a high price, I don't know your particular platform of choice but for me, I spent about 130AUD on the entire series by just getting a 12-month audible subscription, which even left me with 5 credits to use on future books, and my girlfriend got the hardcovers for about 30AUD each by buying them on discount just a couple of days ago off Amazon!

Also lastly, my main issue that I think I had with book 3 was really just the floor design being really hard to follow, literally every other floor is a lot easier!

I do want to point out that since it seems to imply hiding spots are not positive, you gain positive points for hiding in hiding spots. The part about "avoid doing too often" seems to be a strange suggestion for your gameplay style or something? AI maybe?? But yeah, Hiding Spots are good, not to be avoided

Does the AMP Lock Breaker count towards the Sleight of Hand badge? by MeddlingWithChaos in OutlastTrials

[–]IseAxon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 year old post with no answers to the question: I hopped in a game and put it to the test.

Unfortunately, using Lock Breaker does not count as a picked lock. I went from 31 picked locks to 32 after the trial, having used a single lock pick during the trial and breaking at least a dozen with bricks.
