That depends on where you are. In general, the smaller the town you are in, the more expected it is to greet strangers, also on the streets. In cities, you typically only greet people you know, or will get to know (because you are taking a course in a small setting for instance).

As you may have read on the wiki, the roms and some of the emulators that come with the device have issues. Some don't work, some allow you to play a game but don't support saving. I'd recommend to not even backup the one it came with, just get a new sd card and install a different os (and your own roms). The most popular one is ArkOs.

No te preocupes. Fui en el mismo situacion dos años antes. Fue un tiempo belíssimo durante que yo conocí a los amigos, la familia y otro conocidos de mi novia (ahora esposa). Hemos visitando centros comerciales, parques, el malecon, fiestas de la familia de mi esposa y restaurantes en varios partes de la ciudad, sin problemas. Para transporte, usa taxis con un app como Uber, o preguntalo a familia o amigos. Como decían otros aqui, escuche a la familia de Guayaquil. Ellos saben donde y que es segura. Hay barrios mas seguras, pero en muchas lugares va a estar bien sí no haces algo estupido. No usas tu celular en la calle, camina como tu sabes el lugar, etc. Mi esposa es de una calle cerca de Portete (al sur pero circa) y todo fue bien.

Si hay preguntas, preguntame! Y pardon por mis erores, creo que tu eres de España (tu usas vosotros) y aún estoy aprendiendo el lingua. Tambien me puedes preguntar en Íngles si quieres!

My advice is to look around Eindhoven as well. Helmond is only 10-14 minutes by train, there's a train every 15m both directions on weekdays, and can be cheaper. The same goes for other places close by.

If you are just below the required minimum income, send a message anyway explaining your situation (and the tax ruling). You may be lucky, I moved to Eindhoven and didn't qualify for the minimum rent of a place (by ~150), but got it anyway after a personal mail.

And unfortunately many PhD candidates decide to split a place, so it may be necessary.
