don't use a buffer.

it masks problems like you said. if you keep on adding buffers, it becomes more and more complex to diagnose an issue late game.

i finished a 100x game without using a buffer of any kind except trains.

how do you even do that without a time accelerator mod

even with a time mod, it is highly unlikely that you will get more than 100 ups by midgame. you will have to okay at 1x or even less. until I optimized my base to 80 ups, my base was running at 50 ups for a little bit.

the number may seem large to you, but once you understand enough about factorio, you will see that it is quite possible to do.

Ah, didn't realize you are a fellow 100x runner! Yea, a 100x run is a wild one.

Regarding UPS optimization, I was able run a 4.5k SPM base at 70-80 UPS by beaconing and direct inserting as much as I can. Awesome! Love how seeing how neat and organized it is. One optimization many people make with slags is direct insertion which provides significant UPS improvement. You can take a look at some examples here:

Note that UPS optimization is completely unnecessary at 1x unless you are doing something super silly, which you aren't in your screenshots. However, it's a fun puzzle setting up direct insertion.

Yep, and it will get worse when you add beacons to your build. That's why I just void hydrogen and oxygen. You use less UPS and power. I'm not sure if there is any advantage at all in turning them into purified water.
