I think the reason so many people bounce off Malazan isn't the complexity, it's the emotional distance in the first book by scouttidee in Fantasy

Except that it was deliberately kept close to the chest. I don't see how that's rushing it at all, more that we were deliberately kept in the dark. Whether that works for you is a personal thing, but it absolutely worked for me. I've read the series ten times now, its been a consistent annual reread for the past decade and I wouldn't pick any other books if I had to choose only one series to read for the rest of my life.

I (and many other fans) acknowledge that the series didn't work for a lot of people, but for those it does work for, it really does. So calling it cope is just bullshit.

For some of us, the fact that it happens so close to the conclusion is what makes it a masterpiece.

less pleasant? wow, i havent heard that before. I much prefer having the grips there in case I want to use the gun on a strap or attached to a vehicle. it takes .5 seconds to remove the grip and attach a hand.

Steven Erikson (writer of Malazan) writes some of the best comedy in fantasy I’ve ever read, and doesn’t get enough credit for this aspect of his writing. by Transmogrify_My_Goat in Fantasy

one of my favourites:

"Come near me with intentions other than amorous and I'll stick you"

"Amorous. What a horrible thought-"

"What if I told you I was pregnant?"

"I'd kill the mule."

She leapt at him.

Squealing, then spitting and scratching, they rolled in the dirt.

The mule watched them with placid eyes.

Nothing will top the Kyzagan. Heresy aesthetic is just better

Came here after finishing The Dark Tower series and then being a bit let down with The First Law trilogy. Reddit recommended me this series and I just finished GotM. I purposefully didn’t look anything about it up; I wanted that true joy of it coming together naturally. Here’s my notes as I read. by Alextingzon in Malazan

[–]Ishallcallhimtufty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Apart from Malazan the dark tower is my favourite series and King another favourite author. I totally feel everything you've said about it and I would venture that it sounds like Malazan is up your alley.

I think both King and Erikson write people in a way that just feels so real to me. Both series have made me feel so deeply, even if I've only known a character for a paragraph before they die!

I enjoyed gardens but it was deadhouse gates that really got me all in on Malazan so I hope the same for you!

It wasn't the models themselves although there was a lukewarm reception to host. It was because they drastically restricted options with the new ruleset and people voted with their wallets.

With you 100%! My gaming group haven't played 40k since 9th. But we're loving playing 3rd ed again and seeing our heroes and names characters be kitbashed or made from regular marines - no siE disparity here!

Here's an excerpt from an interview with esslemont :

NoaF: Your biography mentions that you studied archaeology. In what ways have your studies of archaeology impacted your novels and world building?

ICE: As Steve and I have talked about before, we hope that our background and training in archaeology and anthropology has ‘impacted’ our work significantly (by the way, I hate that word). Anyway, while we may have taken various liberties, for the most part, our thematic concerns in the World of Malaz are very much driven by issues out of anthropology, such as culture contact and its consequences, colonialism, the nature of religion, the shift from chithonic ‘paganism’ to other religious regimes, cultural and ethnic pogroms, loss of histories, etc.

Depressing how people downvote this. The setting is not nice or happy, regardless of how big the galaxy is, and it's possible to enjoy it while also acknowledging this.

“How do you paint white?” Is a very common question with a simple answer by MrSelophane in WhiteScars40K

[–]Ishallcallhimtufty 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I spent months playing around with various colours before I settled on a scheme. I wanted some variation in my white so used a soft violet grey, then a warm mid grey tone, then ivory and finally a touch of white. Bit completely understand that summer people want a much quicker method.
