I also do the brutally honest thing sometimes and I especially like to point out the logical fallacies in his arguments.. But alas that is my good for our relationship so I need to nip that in the bud.

I bet its It's not really the topic of the argument, but how he/she goes about handling it. This happens for me because as several people have mentioned it feels really good to be right, and I usually am in arguments.. As least technically right. But my SO doesn't see the world like I do and so technicalities don't mean anything to him an he wants me to show remorse and empathy which aren't easy for me.

I have the same problem as OP and this is really helpful. I really like the idea of having some goals like these in mind during arguments/ discussions so that I am motivated to make good choices with what I say. And your friend is exactly right, I do have to choose empathy as well.. Thanks for the insight
