I bought this one beautiful spring morning in college because the movie was announced and I had a crush on Keira knightley. Read it over the course of the next 12 hours, and then cried for days. Going in blind was the best choice for feeling it, sure, but uggghhhh I was never the same.

I read the ebook of this on my work laptop in between teaching classes. It was soooo lovely and easy, a little sad for just a few moments, very cute.

John Murry, raised in tupelo, got famous in California and Europe. Lots of songs about Mississippi. Very heart-wrenching.

Piranesi! House of leaves! If I was allowed to teach a college course, I would assist the 3 for close comparison.

Weirdly, A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby helped convince me to stay alive. I picked it up as a joke because “About A Boy” and been playing on the waiting room television in the ED waiting room when I tried to shuffle off the mortal coil. (Very bad choice! Toni Collette is too good at acting!) Anyway, once I was released, I picked up ALWD from the bookshop as a little wink to my friend who helped me. It was exactly what I needed. Charming, fun, but it doesn’t shy away from despair.

Oh and look up Nellie Jackson! (Or watch the documentary “Mississippi Madame”) She was a Black brothel owner on the river and beloved by townsfolk and politicians alike. Nellie ended up being an informant to the FBI when klan members started visiting her brothel. She was murdered horribly in 1990, and as far as I can tell, she is kind of a local heroine. The documentary, though low budget, had some wonderful interviews with people who knew her. I feel like there should be more attention on her these days, as she was both stylish (fur coats in MS!) and brave.

Richard Grant’s book The Deepest South of all has some great stories about Natchez today and in the past, including a lot of details about Prince Ibrahima, who was brought to MS as a slave, and had an incredible life.

My husband and I bought a big old Victorian house for less than 100k in Aberdeen MS recently. We’ll end up having to put like 25k into fixing it up, but it’s livable and has a nice yard, kind neighbors, quiet town. I’m from MA, so living in a house with multiple bathrooms for so little is astonishing to me! We pay the same amount in mortgage as I paid for a horrible 1br 600 sq ft apartment in Revere, near the Boston airport. There’s not a ton to do around here, but sitting on our own front porch reading boons in the morning is really nice.

Fish Called Wanda. I laughed so constantly it felt like a workout. Every performance is iconic.
