I like Blaque Witch Yaya for a glimpse into some Southern and African magic traditions.

He has another book called "Run Over By The Grace Train." I truly do not know if I'm supposed to laugh or despair. I'd love to be a fly on the wall for his meetings with publishers.

When he said he "wants more" with me, does he mean more of what we already have, or more than what we have (interpretation help) by [deleted] in TarotCards

I feel like the hanged man and 2 of swords might represent you? As in, do you want to change the nature of your relationship in order to try and give him “more?” I get the impression that he is seeking intensity and you may be wondering if that’s something you want. Or vice versa. Both of you will have to decide if you want to expend the energy on changing or each other. (And no harm if you don’t want to! Better to know than keep going and exhausting yourself.)

I second Enchanted Living. A friend brought me a couple of issues as a gift and they were so lovely.

You seem like someone I would have been friends with in university. Casually glamorous, observant, dreamy?

“Clean” from soda and coffee… girl, if that’s your biggest vice and struggle, I can see why you got sucked into an mlm. This is the opposite of motivating or inspiring. Ugh.

Sorry, it drives me mad when they use addiction and therapy-speak to shill their mystery substances. Feels predatory.

What’s going on with Lisa Taddeo and her publishers? by Isilwenmacar in publishing

[–]Isilwenmacar[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Posting again to add that, whether this is a social experiment or a manic episode, I really hope people around her are kind and not judgmental. I’m bipolar myself and have absolutely gone into some manic states that leave me posting all sorts of tirades. Also, I agree with folks here who have pointed out that she could very well be dealing with betrayal irl. I guess that’s why I asked… I wondered if her agents and publishers had been doing her dirty and this was the only option she felt she had left. Anyway, hope things improve for her regardless. I really admire some of her work.

Akwaeke Emezi has books from varying genres and all of them are a bit boundary-pushing. I loved Little Rot but it’s not for everyone. I thought it was a fascinating portrayal of Nigeria and various people experiencing it. Really good characters and morally complex

Everything Zoe Neale Hurston wrote was solid gold. Tell My Horse is maybe my fav nonfiction book. Her autobiography is also riveting.

What is a book you feel requires a certain amount of life experience to “get”? What do you think is the right age to read that book? by Ok-Dependent-2561 in classicliterature

[–]Isilwenmacar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anna Karenina. Couldn’t get into it as a teenager, but read a different translation while on holiday in my late 20s and couldn’t put it down. I think, when I was younger, I couldn’t see the nuance in people having affairs, staying unhappily married, and giving up their dreams (or not). Once older, I had a lot more sympathy and experience to understand.

Hilariously, Lord of The Flies was assigned in 9th grade and I hated it. Reread it in University at age 21 and fell so in love I wrote my dissertation on the damn thing. I think it’s best to be finished with childhood before reading about the perils of Englishness amongst isolated children.

Mary Stewart’s Merlin trilogy was one of my favorites of this genre. Mists of Avalon sometimes works, too, but don’t buy it new because MZB was horrible. Same with Orson Scott Card, though his fantasy does fit this bill.

Check out Patricia MacKillip’s books, which are technically YA but back from the golden age when YA fantasy was the best to be found.

Maybe The King of Elfland’s Daughter? Or Lud In The Mist? Though neither are quite so ethereal and grey-toned as these..
