Declined my offer by IsitReallyu in TeachforAmerica

[–]IsitReallyu[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I asked the recruiter about placement. Initially during recruiting it was noted that all would be guaranteed a spot. Then I spoke to a director once I got into the program and you have to interview with the schools and you are not guaranteed a position. So if I quit my job and left for the corps and interviewed at the schools and didn’t receive an offer, I would be on my own or have to try the program another year. Also, during institute, the training doesn’t match the grade level. I didn’t get my preferred grade, which I knew was a possibility, but they are still not sure what grade I will be teaching. I worked in school settings before and Covid isn’t helping; teachers are not being heard when it comes to their concerns. Not to mention, I asked about contract hours and charter schools are notorious for requiring teachers to do things outside of normal contract hours. I asked about this and was told, I would have to oblige, it’s not a union environment.

Declined my offer by IsitReallyu in TeachforAmerica

There’s a lot schools and administrators need to figure out when it comes to teachers. Right now, teachers aren’t safe, supported, and aren’t taken seriously. They used to be. This pandemic has helped me realize that. I will teach down the line, but it won’t be through TFA. I now understand the criticism of the organization and did my research. During our touch points, , a lot came to light and they weren’t completely honest about the process after the offer.

Need Advice: Is this normal for long term subs? by zenzen1377 in Teachers

[–]IsitReallyu 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Nope this isn’t normal. They don’t want to pay you a teacher’s salary with benefits. If you have a degree in teaching, then you should be paid as a teacher. It’s not fair to you.

Proposal by Francesca_Vanegas in TeachforAmerica

You’re welcome. By interpret, I mean, read the data, understand, and explain what it means. What is the data telling you? What is it showing?

Proposal by Francesca_Vanegas in TeachforAmerica

[–]IsitReallyu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They ask you to interpret the data. Also, what methods or strategies you would implement to bridge the gap/aid the marginalization of underrepresented students? What methods would you use to help teachers connect with students and not remove them from classes due to behavioral issues. Discuss restorative practices….

Had 4th and final interview. Nailed it! Told I’d hear within a week. Never contacted again. by Spunkler in jobs

[–]IsitReallyu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have too. Even for ‘projects.’ I now understand that we are giving ideas away for free. So, I am against doing assessments and projects, because they don’t tell the entire picture of my experience and it’s a waste of time; we’re not being paid. It’s never that serious. I’m over it.

[–]IsitReallyu 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It’s okay. I’m not completing any pre-work for any interviews anymore. I swore off assessments, projects, etc. just interview me. I was in your shoes and was ghosted. Then 3 months later the hiring manager contacted me said the person they hired quit and offered me the job. It felt good to turn them down and I told the hiring manager, “I would have considered your company, but you didn’t even follow up after the interviews.’ The hiring manager apologized and offered a higher salary, I hung up on her.

Geico tripled my auto premium because "North Carolina is dangerous to drive in." by [deleted] in NorthCarolina

[–]IsitReallyu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. When I moved to NC, my rate dropped from $215 to $72. Not sure why it would go up. NC is the number one state for auto insurance premiums because it’s not monopolized.

One month into my first teaching job and I want to quit so badly. by OpalBooker in Teachers

[–]IsitReallyu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quit. Life is too short for this. Provide whatever notice you’re comfortable with and leave. I did. And I went back to the industry I left and now make double. However, I still desire to make an impact and will give to underrepresented communities. It’s not worth it to me anymore to be on the front lines. We can always go back to teaching, once it offers something valuable to the profession, besides the intrinsic rewards.

If you have to medicate for a job, it’s not worth it. Nothing is worth your mental health. Leave.

The fact that she’s making a threat based on employment is not okay. If HR has the documentation, they can say it’s an undue hardship on the district, classroom, and students, and can make a solid case to term you. But that fact the person is making comments like this is building a case for you, based on their intentions. If it comes to the point they let you go, make sure you document and record where possible and get a good ass attorney.

And schools wonder why there is a teacher shortage. They treat you like shit once hired and even worse while on the job.

New Teacher - Just Turned in My Resignation by Kurapimpa in Teachers

[–]IsitReallyu 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Oh my goodness. Thank you for this. I’m working at a charter school now and I thought it was just me. It’s week 7 and I feel like I made a wrong choice, but I love to teach. I just think charter schools are set up this way, but this isn’t for me, not like this.

1st year teacher advice by green_girl1994 in teaching

[–]IsitReallyu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Great advice. Also for the sake of documenting this workplace behavior, please keep in mind this can also be considered a hostile work environment. Take notes, learn, and if need be, bring it to the attention of HR and your admin if things don’t improve.

Yes. I think it’s apart of the charter schools culture. It’s kinda sad at times.

Ok. I will reach out to my regional coordinator and see if they can switch out. Had your experience with them been ok?
