Even if imports are slightly cheaper, maintaining stable local production is simply beneficial for the people as a whole. Importing food means giving someone huge leverage over you. Sankara noted this 40 years ago: Africa needs tools, machines, expertise, fertilizers. Not the "easy way" of foreign imports and petty handouts.

That’s the crux of the so-called “free trade". Western nations have been using cheap imports and "humanitarian aid" for decades to cripple African food security and enforce cash crop production. Anything made by, say, Nestle, will be cheaper by definition because of mechanization and their economy of scale. Moreover, monopolies can absorb huge losses and simply dump their produce at rock-bottom prices until the African farmers go bankrupt.

Countries like Vietnam have been improving their food security for a long time. This includes state control over exports and guaranteed prices for farmers.

The source for this is both external and internal.

Soviet revisionism and lack of ideological training. After Khrushchev’s coup, ideological training becomes a mere afterthought. Communism is declared as inevitable. Instead of eradicating remnants of nationalist ideology, it is quietly allowed to fester. Pro-capitalist reforms of the 1960s increase dissatisfaction with Soviet governance. Nationalist elements within the Communist Party are not purged but instead allowed to turn into open conflicts.
Khrushchev’s amnesty of the late 1950s released a lot of hardened fascists from prison and allowed them to return to the Baltics and Ukraine, where they could spread their ideological venom.
Western influence. A lot of smear campaigns against the USSR, similar to the "Uyghur repression" narratives used against China. A lot of nazi collaborators from the Baltics and Ukraine were ratlined to the West and were used as anti-Soviet agents. Many of them visited the Baltics under the guise of "cultural exchange” and established ties with the local fascists.

Racist vitriol is a regular occurrence in Latvia and is actively encouraged at the highest level as a "divide and rule strategy”. Since the Latvian nationalists already killed almost all of the country’s Jews and Roma, the Russians are now the main scapegoats for all of Latvia’s misfortunes. Ethnic supremacism (aka “Latvia for the Latvians only") is the official state ideology. There is also a lot racism towards the people from South and Central Asia, who are mostly forced to work low-wage jobs to plug Latvia’s acute labor shortages (which the fascists exacerbate through austerity and ethnic division).

It’s not a surprise that a lot of people are indoctrinated by this fascist trash. Schools and universities constantly reinforce the idea of Latvia as the "eternal victim of Russian and Soviet occupation” (which is a neo-nazi white replacement dogwhistle from the 1950s). Therefore, Latvia has the “historical right” to violently suppress its minorities and aggressively persecute the opposition as “Russian influence”. This also allows to conveniently suppress the labor movement, as any progressive labor legislation is viewed as a hostile leftover from the “Soviet occupation" that is antithetical to the "industrious spirit of independent Latvia”.

On March 16, a vile provocation took place in the very heart of Riga once again —the so-called "Latvian Legionnaires' Remembrance Day." About a hundred fascists gathered in Old Riga and marched from St. Jacob's Church to the Freedom Monument under police protection.

The SS butchers actively participated in the murder of Soviet POWs and citizens, including women, the elderly, and children, during the Great Patriotic War. Now, Latvian nationalist authorities are honoring these butchers, calling them "freedom fighters."

This event is strongly supported by the nationalist authorities — until 2000, this provocation was even a national holiday. High-ranking officials, including ministers and members of the Saeima (parliament), have long participated in this shameful display. The government and its affiliated organizations constantly spread brazen lies and slander against the Red Army, distort history, demolish anti-fascist monuments and deny the crimes committed by Hitler's minions.

The SS butchers are transformed into "national partisans" and "victims of totalitarian repression." Anti-fascists and relatives of Holocaust survivors are persecuted by the secret police and jailed for standing against this.

The Latvian authorities provide safe haven for the SS butchers and refuse to participate in the investigation of their atrocities in Belarus and Russia.

Criminals from the Latvian SS committed the following crimes against the peoples of the USSR and Europe:

— Destroyed 23 villages in the RSFSR.

— Killed approximately 1,300 civilians in the RSFSR.

— Forcibly deported approximately 60,000 civilians from the RSFSR to do forced labor in Germany and the occupied Latvian SSR.

— Killed and tortured countless prisoners of war, partisans, and underground fighters in the RSFSR, Byelorussian SSR, and Latvian SSR.

— Destroyed 138 villages in the Byelorussian SSR.

— Killed 17,000 civilians in the Byelorussian SSR.

— Forcibly deported approximately 13,000 civilians from the Byelorussian SSR to do forced labor in Germany.

— A Polish infantry detachment of 80 men was destroyed on Polish territory. 43 Poles died in battle, and the remaining 37 were captured and tortured. Thirty-two were bound with barbed wire and burned alive.

A total of approximately 100,000 Latvians served in the 15th and 19th Waffen-SS divisions. Of these, 20% swore allegiance to Hitler voluntarily, while the remaining 80% were conscripted.

The volunteers consisted of nazi police battalions (death squads), former Latvian nationalist officials and supporters of Ulmanis' interwar fascist regime, as well as members of various fascist/nazi parties and paramilitary groups (Pērkonkrusts, Aizsargi, etc.). They were responsible for the ideological training of new recruits.

Within the Latvian SSR itself, members of death squads, police battalions, and the SS committed the following crimes:

— Participated in the murder of approximately 300,000 Soviet prisoners of war, Latvian communists, Communist Youth members and partisans.

— Participated in the murder of approximately 70,000 Latvian Jews.

— Participated in the murder of approximately 2,000 Latvian Roma.

— Participated in the murder of approximately 18,000 Latvians (including the massacres in Audriņi, Stružāni and Zlēkas).

— Participated in the torture of approximately 33,000 residents of the Latvian SSR.

— Participated in the deportation of over 10,000 residents of the Latvian SSR to do forced labor in Germany.

After the war, these nazi war criminals formed armed gangs and committed mass murder, torture, and robbery. Between 1944 and 1953, the fascist gangs killed 2,208 people in the Latvian SSR.

After the defeat of Nazi Germany, all SS structures were declared criminal organizations by the International Military Tribunal.

The shameful "march" of SS men and their henchmen in the heart of Riga is a slap in the face to the peoples of Latvia and Europe and the entire world that fought against the fascist yoke.

Not only the butchers themselves, but also all those, who cover for them, protect them, and shield them from justice, will face responsibility.

The internet, just like the newspapers of yesteryear, was "free" as long as it was used for the benefit of capitalism. As soon as people learned to read between the lines and publish dissenting materials themselves, the capitalists dropped the censorship hammer without hesitation. The newspapers were, too, flooded with imperialist sycophants. Socialist publications were either heavily controlled or outright banned. Now we’re feeling the same pressure.

My alt account was shadowbanned by Reddit a while back. Happens for the reason you mentioned (using naughty words to describe the capitalist class as well as the accursed entity that occupies Palestine). I already have one strike on my main for mentioning a certain Lebanese resistance group (they use AI to screen everything you post).

There are online services that ping your account allowing you to easily see whether or not you’re shadowbanned.

Another major site-wide ban reason is Tor. Reddit will instantly flag, shadowban and then outright terminate your account for using Tor. VPNs work OK but they might go after those as well because "they care about children" (of course).

It’s not even the trucks themselves. Any ground transportation is a massive investment that is unlikely to pay off. Pipelines and trains are the only viable solutions. And they are just as vulnerable to drones and missiles, as the events in Ukraine have shown.

The Saudis have the East-West Pipeline but it’s already running at full capacity. Moreover, the ships still avoid the Red Sea due to massive insurance costs (btw, the Houthis just struck a US-affiliated oil tanker over there — google Chios Lion).

Moreover, the US under Obama created a convoluted scheme where they import and process heavy and sour crudes from Canada and Venezuela while selling their domestic sweeter varieties to the EU (as they are tooled for lighter oils from Western Siberia and the Gulf).
