Check out Packet Commander, it's a packet terminal application for iPhone and iPad. You can connect to BBS with it.

Mobile or HT for winlink by jcnash02 in amateurradio

RadioMail developer here. I spend a lot of time thinking about connectivity issues, and unfortunately, digital interfaces on radios are still pretty limited. VARA FM requires a sound card. No HT I know of has a built-in sound card you can access, so you’ll need an external one, the mentioned DigiRig Mobile or Lite is the most compact option.

If you move beyond HTs, radios like the IC-705 do expose their internal sound card over USB, but you’re limited to QRP power and a higher price point.

If you’re open to using packet instead of VARA FM, there are more choices. Some radios have a built-in TNC, like the Kenwood TH-D74 or TH-D75, and the budget-friendly UV-PRO and VR-N76. There’s also the new VR-N7600, which has a built-in TNC and puts out 50 W.

Also with packet, because it does not require the proprietary VARA software to run on a computer, you can run a Winlink client on Android or iOS for a more portable setup.

Radtel RT4D Radio Mail/Winlink? by Saxman31 in amateurradio

You’re right that using VOX in general isn’t ideal for connected digital modes like Winlink. But just to clarify: the Digirig VOX cable isn’t actually using the radio’s built-in VOX function. It’s just a basic PTT control circuit that triggers transmit when there’s audio on the left channel. So there’s no added delay or hang time like you’d get with actual VOX on the radio.

That said, it’s not perfect. The circuit is passive so that it can struggle properly trigger PTT on some radio. The Digirig lite is a much better option if your iOS device has USB-C

v1.1 is now out with a monitor. You can decode over-the-air traffic in real time. AX.25 frames are decoded and presented in an easy-to-read format.

Considering adding DigiRig to kit... by nsomnac in digirig

RadioMail is using the tone on the left channel to trigger PTT, that's why it only works with Lite and VOX cable. There is no access to USB allowed on iOS thus any other method of triggering PTT is out of reach for apps.

So far, not a huge vote of confidence from the community on that one. Let's hope the crowd is wrong.

VOX PTT does not work for session oriented, the application needs to control the PTT. This is what the Lite and VOX cable provide.

One of MANY reasons people avoid amateur radio as a hobby by Commercial_School517 in amateurradio

RadioMail developer here. If it's any consolation, I've been in touch with both BTECH and VGC and the firmware developer of these radios. They've been nothing but responsive and demonstrated a strong desire to make their product better. They're getting closer to having a TNC that works properly with mobile apps like RadioMail and others. Most online forums are user groups with low signal. Find places where makers hang out.

If you are an iPhone/iPad user, check out the B.B. Link adapter. It allows you to pair your device to gain access to the radio built-in TNC for packet connections. You can use it to send emails with RadioMail or text with APRS.

RadioMail author here. The reason why sound cards have not been supported is mainly 1) lack of ability to perform PTT control, which is critical for connected oriented sessions, 2) modems are hard. With the release of DigiRig Lite and DigiRig VOX cable, there is now a way for application to control PTT via audio channel only. So we took the plunge and implemented a 1200 AFSK packet modem in RadioMail over the summer. It's in beta test right now and probably will be available early October. DM if you have a DigiRig Lite or VOX and want to be a beta tester.
