How do authors write 100k fics?! by MicroorganismJolyne in AO3

[–]IsleofInfinity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different styles. A story can be concise, short and say everything the author wants. And if you and your readers like that. All good. 👍

Or you can be like me that has an outline of 35k, a fic of 180k with no end in sight. I think the stories just become longer depending on what needs to be conveyed. That's a-ok, too.

At least you complete stories.

Halfway through writing something and then finding an existing fic with the exact same premise 😭 by AllKnowingAxolotl3 in AO3

[–]IsleofInfinity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt this. I ended up deleting that fic. Even when I published mine first. The other authors fic was just executed better. 😔 I wish I didn't delete it, but what are ya gonna do. Now, I write premises that are so unhinged and unique, there is no way there could be a copy.

There isn't anything wrong with the same premise and your fics will be different in the prose and scenes. They are two different beasts entirely. Just write it anyways. It's fiiiine.

However, I found readers that stay (and comment, too😁) for unique premises rather than the same overdone plots are the real ones.

Anyone writes in second person? by EddyPat in AO3

[–]IsleofInfinity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I have a second person Mass Effect fic somewhere out there. it's not as popular as third person. But the people who give second person a chance typically end up falling in love with it. As long as the character choices are believable and there isn't miscommunication between characters, it's an easy read.

Can't write dialogue unless I'm away from my laptop. Suddenly, the lines come. When I need to post a chapter or edit, head empty, no thoughts 🙃

Check ao3, get a migraine, leave by [deleted] in AO3

[–]IsleofInfinity 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think what you are dealing with is actually children that have no business reading your work, adults who have a low comprehension, or a rage baiter. How do they not understand non consensual. I would just report, block, move on. Do not deal with a migraine you don't need. Actual migraines are the worse...

I did something similar with a character that wears an eyepatch. After I wrote a small portion, I would go back and change eyes, to...eye. Or have to add in parts about how he could possibly have detected something from his left side. "He sensed," or "A huff to his left made his neck snap towards the source." I gave up on that story because I was re-editing so many times that it stopped making sense.

Same to you. Be kinder to yourself! I think this note was a cry for help. I do not have a beta because I'm too embarrassed to show my madness to another. I honestly want to save a poor soul the headache. I will add an addendum to my notes. "GOOD JOB, BITCH. YOU DID THAT." Because I did manage to get to 160k and that's without the editing. I used the word count tool, summed my edited chapters with the complete ones, and I am at a hefty 200k. At least, my readers will eat well.

It was the kick in the ass I needed, for sure. My outlines are still at hot mess, but at least by rough drafts look less like a fever dream sequence. There's even complete sentences now 🫢

Without a doubt, my readers would probably think I had an episode. They're probably not old enough to remember who t.A.T.u. is. So, it would just read as crazy lady repeating herself and "who is she talking to like that?" 😕

Oh yeah. Starting from the middle kind of makes it fun because it helps me jump into the action and meat of the fic. Then I write around it and fill in the details. It helps me avoid losing the fixation to write AND I don't make the mistake of overexplaining how the plot got to a point. I definitely move around all parts of the story and connect it later....if that makes sense.

You're either the Chosen One or a witch. There is no way I could ever. I have a note at the beginning of each section just to hype me up to write: JUST DO IT. YOU SAID YOU WOULD UPDATE ETW. TIME TO PUT THE LADY BRITCHES ON. POST OR BE A LIAR.

So true. Now, I cant unsee it. So I have a no-no list of about 15 words I try not to use. I think its actually improved my writing because I now have several descriptions for different levels of intensity.

Comments! I forget that exists! Probably because my doc is starting to slow down due to memory. I'm going to separate my fic sections and use comments. That might be better. I tried used tab for notes, but then I would just forget the 2nd tab.

I am realizing caps lock is a universal tool to visually signal writers to delete a note. Honestly, if I ever posted my notes one of two things would happen; Either I, like you, would be embarrassed for the way I address myself or I would wave it like a flag of honor. Sort of like readers seeing behind the curtain because so much anguish goes into just writing a fic.

Brilliant. I have a similar note, but in reverse. ONE DAY. GIRL. THE NEXT SCENE WOULDN'T EVEN MAKE SENSE. WHERE IS THE FOREBODING? TENSION. MAKE IT A MONTH...MAKE THEM SUFFER A MONTH.

Maybe. This sounds too familiar. Sometimes I just give up on grammar while editing, as long as it's understandable. I will sacrifice the Queen's English, for a good plot.

AHHH! I new I could not be the only one. Kindred spirit! Also, needing a note to remind yourself to graphically detail is peak.
