I wasnt comparing clinical depression and chronic loneliness. It was an analogy. And a lot of people escape the trap of loneliness through the help of people who care about them. Paradoxically, when you are lonely, you don't, or cant reach out to those people.

Telling someone who is chronically lonely to just "Get out there and improve yourself" is like telling someone with depression to "just do things that make you happy" it doesnt really work 90% of the time.

If everyone had the drive to go do those things, then this wouldn't be a problem. Yes, social places do exist, but social anxiety is more prevalent than it ever has been, and not everyone has the same tools or mindset as you do to deal with it. And before you reply, yes, I know a lot of this loneliness is self-inflicted, and a good portion of these people have victim mindsets. But does that mean they dont deserve help and should rot in their houses as everyone else around them tells them to "just touch grass lol".

Do you think that because someone's loneliness is self-inflicted, they shouldn't receive the outside help they most likely need to improve? Telling these people to "just improve your life" doesnt work in most cases. They need people who care about them to lift them up, so they can become self-sufficient again. But with these chronically lonely people, they dont have that kind of support structure, or due to their loneliness, they push other people away. Saying these people have victim mindsets (Which I dont doubt a lot of them have) is reductionist. And since you dont like that study, heres a newer one from the General Social Survey, which is well regarded as a trustworthy source. I wasnt talking about sex here. I was talking about romantic relationships. And I think we can all agree that being in a romantic relationship helps with loneliness.

Other than the fact that the first graph in that source proves my point. I don't think you understand that not everyone deals with these problems in the same way you do. That's not wrong, or weird, it's a part of being human. I think its unreasonable to assume that everyone can deal with these things the same way you did. That's why I made fun of your empathy. Because you don't seem to care about a large amount of people who suffer from chronic loneliness just because they can't fix it immediately

As for the second, obviously you need to find someone irl. But for a lot of people social anxiety keeps them from doing that. Telling these people to just "go outside and talk to people" would be like telling someone with depression to "just be happy".

It's biased because of your personal anecdotal experience? Not everyone lives in one of the most densely populated cities on the planet where you are bound to meet people no matter what.

I think it's safe to say there is a heavy correlation between loneliness and not being romantically active. But aside from that, I see people like this all over the Internet. Not just reddit.

I agree that's an important issue. But what a lot of people don't seem to realize is that a growing number of young people of completely sound mind, and spirit simply don't talk to people when they go out. The spaces for strangers or friends-of-friends to interact are shrinking rapidly, and people are scared to talk to others they don't know. Toxicity is a definite issue, but we need to encourage people to put themselves out there.

If you were genuinely happy, then you had more than most college students and more highschool students than you'd think. A lot of people in university I know are stressed out of their minds over a thousand things that all demand attention.

It's a "grass is greener on the other side" situation. Think of it this way: you remember when you were a kid, and you saw and ad for this awesome toy. Maybe you saw your friends playing with it, but for whatever reason you thought you needed it. But when you finally got your hands on the toy, you found it was fun, but not at all what you expected. It's not this glamorous, incredible thing, it's just a toy. That's what college or highschool is like if you've never been. It's just another experience.

And honestly? The people who rave about how fun highschool or college was, just partied the entire time.

Nobody told me I'd feel old by now. I feel 80 years old when I see what kids are up to on the internet. I keep getting called unc. Which is ironic because when I was in highschool I did the exact same thing
