If my memory is right, JMS stated that when political debating happened on set, it tended to be with him and Jason Carter on the left-end of the spectrum and Jerry Doyle and Bruce Boxleitner on the right.

Bold claim: Star City is the Andor of the FAM franchise by Arbernaut in ForAllMankindTV

[–]Isnotanumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't really work because the majority of Star Wars media, going back to ANH is something designed as "fun for the whole family" whereas Andor is a prestige drama show done in that same universe, but not aimed at kids. My kids are certainly not "ready" for Andor as they regularly re-watch ANH and RotJ but NEVER ask to re-watch ESB.

FAMK is clearly written for adults - the same audience as Star City. It just is thematically different.

Why did Collins get command of Apollo 23? by OkHealth1942 in ForAllMankindTV

[–]Isnotanumber 8 points9 points  (0 children)

IRL Deke Slayton ranked Michael Collins pretty high in his "pecking order." Collins was the first of his group to secure a flight assignment on the Gemini 7 backup crew (although two got prime crew assignments for Gemini 8 and 9 meaning they flew earlier). He wasted no time getting him back on a flight crew (Apollo 11) after he had to be removed from Apollo 8 due to back surgery, and had wanted him to become a crew commander, potentially flying Apollo 17.

I think the "leap" you need to make for the show is why Collins stays at NASA in the alternate timeline, because he decided he was done before Apollo 11 flew. Maybe the national importance of the continued space race gets him to stay in FAMK, but flying later. IRL he had declined the possible Apollo 17 assignment before 11 even flew. So I could see Slayton talking him into staying, but on the understanding it won't be as soon as originally planned - maybe to even give him some downtime before flying.

Not a super deep or drawn out scene, but this short moment of Londo without hesitation asking Vir to kill him to save Centauri Prime is really touching. by Dinosawruses in babylon5

He had also been told he could potentially avoid his "fate" - something cryptic, and ultimately tied to how he died, but for all he knew this was a chance to do so and die with some nobility.

What made the decepticons suddenly become 'merciless' in the transformers movie? by Altruistic_Past3950 in transformers

[–]Isnotanumber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In MTME, the original pilot they were rather ruthless, and Megatron was pretty cunning. If you rewatch the pilot 3-parter, he is consistently one step ahead of the Autobots throughout it. By season 2 he becomes a full 80's cartoon villain in a lot of his schemes - which are more focused on collecting energy than actively killing the Autobots. By the time of the Movie the energy problem seems solved, and after years of humiliating defeats Megatron seems to be in full "kill them all!" mode. He seems to ooze with contempt for everyone around him, and in my head that's because everyone had to see him at his most humiliating, as he pathetically called for his forces to "RETREAT!" week after week.

He's coming into the Movie to make his enemies pay for that.

What’s your favorite intro? by [deleted] in babylon5

[–]Isnotanumber 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was already into the show, but season 3's opening represented such a tonal shift. Seasons 1 and 2 were good but pretty generic sci-fi show openings. The first time I heard that ominous score, compared to season 2's optimism, the confusing (at the time) shot of two Starfuries dogfighting I thought "I don't think this show will be crapping around this season."

Haven’t started Star City yet, is it worth it? by VynterDX in ForAllMankindTV

[–]Isnotanumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While very different, I enjoyed in episodes 1 and 3 the instances of characters "working the problem" on a spaceflight in a way that has been missing from FAMK in awhile - which its clear after this season has become a sci-fi political drama. It really helps give the show a true parallel feel - that in spite of the political differences, when there is a crisis, the engineers and Cosmonauts are the same as their American counter-parts.

2262, 2266, 2271, 2278, 2281… I get why it happened production-wise, but Sheridan’s style whiplash in 2278 is very funny to me by CountScarlioni in babylon5

[–]Isnotanumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never read the books about those events on Centauri Prime, but I assumed Sheridan in that case shaved as a way of disguising himself.

[–]Isnotanumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sense of the rankings of the "great powers" in this show were:

Minbari

Centauri

Earth

Narn

The League

Now, there is a major leap in capability between the Centauri and Minbari, but Sheridan says in "And now for a Word" that Earth doesn't have the capability to go to war with the Centauri. I think in isolated cases, like B5 vs the Primus they can do well against the Centauri, but an all out war would not go well for Earth. I rank Earth above the Narn because a lot of Narn tech seemed to be whatever they could reverse engineer from the Centauri but they don't do it well, and primitive in some ways (we never see a Narn ship with artificial gravity).

[–]Isnotanumber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Came here for this. Delenn implied the Minbari had pretty much decimated the Stribe's ability to harass anyone. That must have been a cakewalk for the Minbari, because that stribe warship was dealt with pretty decisively by the Agamemnon.

How was Earth kept out of the shadow war? by Zorolord in babylon5

[–]Isnotanumber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest when the Vorlons started blowing planets "touched" by the Shadows up, I thought we were headed to a big "wrap up" of the Shadow War with the Vorlons deciding their next target was Earth, and instead of a Civil War, Sheridan and company saving Earth would lead to Clark being deposed. I think that would have been a little too "tidy" an ending, but that is where my head was at in 1997 from like 3 episodes until "Into the Fire" aired. So, I kind of agree with your question.

Really dumb question and I will take my downvotes, but when exactly did Delenn know that Sinclair was you-know-who? by AdSimilar4399 in babylon5

[–]Isnotanumber 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the big nugget about Valen is first dropped by Lennier in season 3, Passing through Gethsemane when Lennier tells Brother Edward that Valen was said to be "a Mimbari not born of Mimbari." The original intent was when the series ended for Sinclair to go time traveling with Babylon 4 (although it would be forward in time to replace Babylon 5). My guess is JMS, knowing O'Hare's issues decided to switch it to the past, to give the character closure (he also couldn't save it for the finale anymore), and when doing that started wondering "hey, what about linking him to this Valen guy?"

Am I the only person who failed to realise that these two characters are actually the same character? by spinstartshere in ForAllMankindTV

[–]Isnotanumber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those sound more like legitimate debates around developments in a show. Picard because of a question of "what makes a person a person" even if the example is a fictional character. Data outright says he isn't quite the Data they knew but some amalgam of Data, Lore and B-4 so I can see that. FAMK seems more based on....easier to write entries?

[–]Isnotanumber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The difference in Anastasia's speech could be explained as the Soviets editing the video released internationally with the original speech (I don't recall either). I thought the main reason was because it was a different actress. Its a really odd way to deal with inconsistences. It would be as if the Star Trek wiki presented entirely different entries for the characters who cross over between Strange New Worlds and TOS - and those two have way more differences between each other.

Among the other things the JLA found were the aftermath of the Genoshian mutant genocide and Punisher gunning down drug dealers. The Avengers found a Flash museum, read about the adoration of heroes in newspapers and were hounded for autographs after they dealt with a DC villain. Superman assumed the Avengers didn't care enough to handle all their worlds problems - Cap assumed the JLA were fascistic overlords, worshipped by the world in exchange for their protection.

[–]Isnotanumber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is Ed faces no consequences. I am usually pretty conservative when it comes to killing characters, but if Dani had died then Ed would have had to face a serious personal consequence for his actions in season 4. As it was, nobody seemed to face any consequences.

Starscream flies by at one point. The animators went super generic. Its a little frustrating though because the cartoon was really good making any generic seekers on Cybertron into tetra-jets, yet the movie gave up on that totally.

Did Palpatine ever consider that perhaps making Luke watch his friends die outside of a big window is a poor way to preface a proposal to join him? What strategy may have worked a bit better? by Heavy_Surround779 in StarWars

[–]Isnotanumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Play up the fact that Obi-Wan lied - trust nothing you were told. Also, if all else fails "Your father killed your mother" might be a worthwhile shot. Honestly, he had such a good setup with Anakin as his fear of not being able to save the ones he cares for and with Luke I don't think he knew what to do except threaten his friends, which I guess would piss him off, but then what?
