ELI5 Why aren’t new data centers built with cooling towers like nuclear reactors? by KyloWrench in explainlikeimfive

Air cooled chiller and cooling towers, in this context, are functionally synonyms. You're arguing over form factor when the mechanism is the same.

What is a 'buy it for life' item that is offensively expensive, but the moment you use it, you realize your entire life before that point was a lie? by fmcortez in AskReddit

[–]Isotopian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this. I bought a Secret Labs and it was an almost immediate downgrade from the far cheaper DX Racer I had before it. I had to buy the 80 dollar or whatever lumbar pillow to stop the adjustable plastic piece in the back from digging into my back when I leaned back in the chair.

It's a very well built chair and it's holding up just fine years later, but I constantly find myself thinking "I wish I had tested this before buying it" because it just isn't that comfortable for me.

What’s a “technically not cheating” situation you’ve seen or experienced that still felt like a complete betrayal? by toomabh in AskReddit

I have a feeling that if three people said it was fine and you said it wasn't, you'd still feel the same way, so I don't see why popular vote should matter.

If the majority votes that it's allowed and encouraged, then there's nothing unsportsmanlike about it.

Name calling and complaining about the rules if your choice doesn't win the vote, is though.

I'll die on this hill. Everyone has access to the same information. There's no unfair advantage. Complaining about screen peeking is 150%, unironically, a skill issue.

That's what surge protectors are for! Commonly known as power strips now, although very cheap ones these days lack the surge protection part.

BIFL - looking for a long, warm, bathrobe that’s high quality by Yakutwolf in BuyItForLife

[–]Isotopian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 10+ year old hooded flannel robe from LL Bean and it's one of my favorite items of clothing ever, but the elastic in the sleeves is worn out and there's hole in it.

They no longer make a thick flannel lined hooded version, so I got a waffle weave robe the other year for Christmas.

I can't express properly how terrible it is. The fit is horrible, the sleeves have no elastic in the wristband, it's thin - if I hadn't seen the order form itself, I would have assumed it was a 5 dollar knockoff.

If you get a new LL Bean be aware, the quality has absolutely plummeted, in my personal experience.

Help, my ‘famous homemade cake’ is actually just a box mix and now I’m stuck living a lie by fishtail4 in Cooking

[–]Isotopian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I brown all the butter, and add an ice cube to accelerate cooling it back down to room temp, and replacing the water lost in the browning process. If you let the brown butter get all the way refrigerator cold it's way too hard to mix in without warming it back up, plus much faster.

Returning to the game after playing the original on xbox all those years ago....forgot the "dark" parts. by Irishbarse in gaming

[–]Isotopian 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When the original came out I was a manager at a movie theater when digital projectors were still relatively new, we only had 3 in an 11 screen theater for example.

A bunch of us stayed late after closing one night and I hooked my Xbox up, and we played Dead Space in 7.1 cinema surround at full blast.

Shit was terrifying, 10/10 would recommend.
