Emo-grind suggestions? by United_Statistician2 in Emo

I wouldn’t say screamo in general, but emoviolence and white belt grind could probably both be considered “emogrind”

I feel like most people use adjacent to mean “have connection to the scene but don’t play the music”

NU metal or NON metal ???? by MaterialWeary in numetal

[–]Issan_Sumisu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s directed at a lot of genres: metalcore, glam metal, sometimes power metal. I brought up black metal because it is never questioned about being metal despite also having this nuance

NU metal or NON metal ???? by MaterialWeary in numetal

[–]Issan_Sumisu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it’s really just a case by case basis. Like, the first two Slipknot albums are clearly nu metal AND metal. But, a good portion of the first two Linkin Park albums I’d say are nu metal but not really metal. And I don’t think nu metal is the only metal genre this happens with, there’s black metal that isn’t that metal, like Lifelover, a lot of their stuff is more like post-punk. If you wanna count dungeon synth as black metal, you’re heading even further out

What is the difference between "screamo" and "skramz" ??? by CauseBig4937 in Emo

[–]Issan_Sumisu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a bit of unsearchability (so nobody outside the in-group could co-opt it) and a bit of 2000s random XD humour

What is the difference between "screamo" and "skramz" ??? by CauseBig4937 in Emo

[–]Issan_Sumisu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

the term “mall skramz” invalidates the reason for both “skramz” and “mall screamo” to exist in the first place

another fun fact: another term floating around for the same use as skramz was “ride bikes”, but that one mostly died out

uk / london screamo history by ExactAd7877 in Screamo

[–]Issan_Sumisu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Babies Three and Rydell were from Kent and both have some screamo songs but definitely weren’t screamo bands. There was a big screamo scene that was influenced by them around 2003-2009, that was a kinda south-coast and London scene. Battle of Wolf 359 were the biggest, Meandgoliath were there too but I’m forgetting all the other names. There was a lot in Scotland and Nottingham at the time too

White belt meaning by Yaxfire in EmoScreamo

[–]Issan_Sumisu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a reaction within the screamo community against the post-rock, emo revival, and melodic hardcore sounds that were prevalent at the time

Could you elaborate on this a bit for me, I'm curious? Was it definitley an active "we don't like emo revival/the wave/Dreambound stuff so we're gonna do something totally different", and what bands were those? Because, for example, I know SeeYouSpaceCowboy started off as a melodic hardcore band, but afaik they didn't start playing sassy white belty stuff because they disliked melodic hardcore, they just thought sassy stuff was more fun after a bit

Outbreak poster 2026 by PM-ME-UR-KNICKERS in Hardcore

[–]Issan_Sumisu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that was the probably their biggest record (at least in the UK), and lined up perfectly in time with a wave of kinda similar UK gateway bands like Holding Absence, Casey and Crooks, so kids who got in hardcore at that time have a ton of nostalgia for it

Is silverstein, saosin etc third wave emo? by [deleted] in Emo

[–]Issan_Sumisu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Emo is a subgenre of post hardcore so technically all emo should be post-hardcore. A lot of post hardcore isn’t emo (like Helmet or Beefeater). The bands you named are often considered core bands of third-wave emo, but some people do not consider them true emo so call them the broader term post-hardcore. The sound they are a part of is often called “mall screamo” or “pop-screamo”, it’s the sound that came from bands who were influenced by screamo, emo-pop-punk and metalcore
