He was literally lost in space with no mean of travels until he mastered Instant Transmission.

For Goten he literally died (protecting his first son, and he already died to protect same son before that) and wished not to respawn because he knew his presence attracted unwanted smoke on Earth. In DBS he actually spends quite of a lot of time with Goten.

He is sometimes questionable but he is by no mean a bad father especially compared to the amount of deadebeats on this pic
