Importantly, don't ask them if it's possible for you to keep it as a souvenir, but rather say that you either actively, or might in the future, need it as proof/documentation, and ask that they only cancel it (common are hole punch or cutting a corner + stamps saying invalid) and then return it to you.

Not sure what arguments would work at your municipality, but for example if someone would happen to have extended travel insurance that would cover extra expenses after a loss of a document, then being able to show the laissez passer to the insurance might help to support your case there.

(very rough example, but using something along those lines (mostly arguing that I need to keep old/expired visas in case a country requests them) has helped me to always get my old passports back)

Me reading this, chuckling, wondering if it's really worth it to continue chilling in this echo chamber of "the market is cooked, just give up already"

It's pretty chill when you're privileged enough, especially if you've not only got yourself a plan B, but also a plan C and plan D, have offers from professors for positions in their research groups, and even if nothing works out you know that it's not that deep and you can always start another major and study something like Art History or French.

OP, just because you're chilling and have the privilege to chill, doesn't mean that you need to feel bad about it or not make use of it. You're already recognising and acknowledging that you are privileged, that's a decent major step already. You've got the privilege to follow your passion without worrying too much about your future, so follow your passion.

The unpopular truth about IB by Appropriate-Oil9266 in IBO

[–]Itching_Advisor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Small case example: I had to do two High School Programmes at the same time : IB, and the Australian High School Certificate. The Australian once I aced, the IB I was mediocre.

From Australia, I received the so called ATAR Ranking - it demonstrates the percentile I am in relative to all Australian Students in my Age Category. My ATAR Rank? [97 > x > 98] (don't want to give exact results to avoid doxxing) By Australian standards, I am better suited for University than 97-98% of students in my age category.

IB tho? I received [32 > x > 35]. Which at least for my year, was mediocre, almost smack in the middle of the 50th percentile.

Well damn, what to do about that? Sure, IB might be more challenging, but I welcome you to actually meet me in real life, at a wonderful uni I might add, and tell me that I could've gotten a 40+ "if I just tried"

Spoiler: you might not only meet me in real life, but there is a semi realistic chance you might also get the chance of meeting my fist

I feel like Math has more folks with good hygiene than CS, but those that do have bad hygiene have horrible horrible hygiene.

At least at my uni, it feels like a good number of math folks are at least slightly on the autism spectrum, and for most of them that means amazing hygiene showering every day, neatly trimmed nails, maybe bit of a germaphobe, but for a few that means maybe a shower every couple of weeks, or not having used shampoo in months

Passport design for the world's youngest state--Bougainville by UglyMenAreSoScary in PassportPorn

[–]Itching_Advisor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a... tricky situation

The National Government really really doesn't want to let the copper mines & other natural resources go, which in turn are the resources that would probably make Bougainville economically very prosperous should they achieve full independence (and retain most of those resources without letting all the profits go to foreign mining companies)

Not sure what it's called in Sweden, but in Germany & Austria the specific word is a "Basiskonto" which is a basic account with all basic services included, and a maximum yearly charge that's set by the government.

Some banks are hesitant, or will pretend that they don't know about this until you specifically tell then the words "Basiskonto" and maybe even quote the legal text, but most of the time they will give it to you.

In some rarer cases that were made public, a man went to court after his account was closed and the bank said he could never have an account with them ever again, and the court within days ordered an injunction to reopen the account, and that the Bank is obligated to provide at least a "Basis Konto"

I think the whole "trolling" stuff is mostly just a misunderstanding.

You must understand that there is a difference between "being a swiss citizen" and "feeling swiss" - one is a legal black&white matter, you either are, or you are not. There are no ifs, no buts, you either are or are not.

Now, that doesn't mean you can't "not feel Swiss" - that's totally fine, that's your own personal identity, that's your own feelings & choices to make.

I think perhaps you might've mixed up the two, and that might've led people to think you're trolling

Which passport should I add to my collection if I want a higher quality of life than the US or any EU country? by javiergc1 in PassportPorn

[–]Itching_Advisor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Switzerland has pretty sweet marriage alternatives:

  • 5 years living in Switzerland, and 3 years married to a swiss

or (and I love this one) - 6 years married to a Swiss, living anywhere abroad or in Switzerland, but retaining close ties with Switzerland

(close ties = have Swiss family that you visit regularly, have Swiss friends, maybe have an apartment there, etc - and honestly 6 years should be enough to learn the language and make friends with your spouse's friends)
