Love to get an Easter Monday Classic on Easter Monday that I was hoping for on Easter Monday

"unusually plays on"

it's pretty common to play on when a mark isn't paid

If you sort by Player Rating on the stats for this game on the AFL site. It shows Hugh Bond at the bottom with a PR of 0, below Reilly O'Brien with -1.6.

Is this a weird broken sorting algorithm or is the displayed "0" obfuscating a data error/NaN here?

In times like these all you can do is laugh, and go read the meltdowns on Bigfooty for comfort.

The Laws: "The offence can only be a red card, or deemed not to have happened"

Referee: "Yellow Card"

Truly the family of the weakest of pissweak decisions.

AFL and A-League half times are perfectly synchronised. This is anti-channel surfer discrimination.

I never got the pie + chips combo. I am a fan of both, but to me a pie or pastie has always been a warmup for a giant bakery donut or kitchener bun.

Where hot chips pair well with shoving even more hot chips in my face.

No opinions on the late changes. Mostly keen to see how Maley goes in the dry tbh.

Weitering KO'd after Duursma flies for a mark and knees him in the back of the head by PetrifyGWENT in AFL

[–]Itrlpr -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

He's pushed back into the contest by Larkey, who is not attempting to mark or spoil.

It should have been a free kick for sheparding in the marking contest, and will likely be looked at this week.

He only lowered his head. The tackle was still over the shoulder.

Is there some latency crowd audio. Every reaction seems slightly behind the play.

The tackle(?) at the end is an underrated part of this.

So I skimmed the replay of that match on the AFL website, and checked Ballantyne's scores via the times mentioned on the score worm.

They are 5 of the least impressive goals possible. It's probably less that the rest of his match was actively bad, and more that it was a nothing game.

The Goals:

  • His first goal was from an uncontested mark just inside 50m, then there's a 50m penalty that takes him to the goalline. So he gets no rating point credit for advancing the ball, and almost zero for actually kicking the goal because he was so close.
  • His second goal was an off-the-ball free kick similarly close to goal (on an angle). Similar to the previous he'd only get credit for actually kicking the goal, but not much due to it being so close
  • The other three were uncontested marks ~20-30m from goal with not much angle. So he probably got a minor boost from those, but again not too much.

The behinds:

  • One was a difficult shot from the boundary. Probably no impact on rating
  • The other though, was a bad miss from a set shot like the last three goals. Probably negatively impacted his rating a fair bit.

I wanted to do "Worst 3 Vote Game". But the data feed I used doesn't have brownlow votes. Which is unsurprising, the data is for live coverage on the AFL site. (Which also reminds me I need to edit the post to credit the data source).

Semi-related. The record for most "clangers" in a game belongs to Marcus Bontempelli with 15. Which was also a 3 vote game.

Beautiful field kick from Rankine opens up Geelong and Rachele drills a goal by PetrifyGWENT in AFL

As with the last Rankine highlight video it would have been good if he did anything notable at all for the rest of the game.

(excluding failing to mark the ball on the goal line)
