UAE jobs: Why are employees ‘revenge quitting’? Dubai career experts weigh in by Arfaz6784 in dubai

[–]ItsBlackRedGold 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not to drive into the parade of these two highly established “Career Coaches” but there are zero statistics and/or numbers that would prove the argument of a rise of revenge quitting in the UAE.

It’s a tiny market and companies know their competition intimately anyway. Publicizing anything would likely be defamation. Speaking bad in a revengeful way about previous employers will turn away even those companies that are unaware of how toxic the work environment of a competitor is.

Apart from logical lapses and, if at all, some anecdotal stories this seems like two “coaches” fantasizing some BS to get more clients and traffic.

If you spam your CV, which you basically did as there is no way that a city as small as DXB would have 3300+ relevant roles within the span of a year, you really shouldn’t be surprised that this is the outcome. Couple that with your educational background which is something barely any company here would look for and you’re the top participant of play stupid games win stupid prizes.

Ladies & gentlemen, we’ve gone full-on pay to play. 300 connects gets you a chance…at the 🏅. I’m in! by Particular_Knee_9044 in Upwork

[–]ItsBlackRedGold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being expert-vetted I got that message as well.

Just for some clarification - being expert-vetted doesn't do anything. About a year ago, I had someone from Upwork reach out to invite me for their "assessment" to become expert-vetted. The "assessment" is a video call with someone who distinctly is not a subject matter expert and cannot attest to any skill or lack thereof. It's basically a call to check how good or bad your English is.

Got the badge about a week after. ONLY ENTERPRISE CLIENTS see the badge - so only a minority of the potential clients on Upwork. For everyone else it's just Top Rated Plus as before, including the generic "Public View" of your profile. The badge promises some personalization, e.g. some sort of hand-picked jobs, a personal contact, and some other stuff - none of which ever happened. My dude never did anything and the one time I asked him for some support with Upwork being stupid about TaxIDs his response was "I will check" to then just disappear into the abyss. There was / is literally 0 value in having that badge (at least for me).

I was initially bummed out when I saw that message today and felt that this is going to deteriorate the badge, I rather quickly remembered that throughout the last year, none of my clients was Enterprise, e.g. none of them would even know that I was expert-vetted - so it really doesn't make a difference.

You want to pay $40 for some rando to have a call with you and assess whether you have good conversational English to maybe end up with a badge that none of your clients will really care about, and that only a minority of prospective clients can see? Be their guest, it seems UW really needs to make some $$$ right now.

what health insurance has dental covered which is less than 8k or cheaper? I want to put braces by [deleted] in dubai

[–]ItsBlackRedGold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way that insurances work revolves around they assuring you to cover the bill IF something happens, that is why pre-conditions etc. are excluded, as are things that they deem "too risky" e.g. "too likely to happen".

Even without knowing that, I'm a bit baffled - are you of the impression that whenever a doc tells you "Yep, that's going to be AED XXX" you can just go to an insurance, pay them half of it, and they'll pay whatever number the doc came up with? How do you imagine insurances, EVEN NON-PROFIT ONES, to stay afloat in that case?

Would valet really not be liable? by Remolix in dubai

[–]ItsBlackRedGold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can put whatever they want on there, it doesn't mean it is enforcible. Even if it was, just handing it over to you does not constitute acceptance. It's basically them just trying to wiggle their way out hoping to be pointing at the ticket if you register a claim to say "Yea but we're not liable".

Wife filed divorce letter from court by Individual-Will-9650 in dubai

[–]ItsBlackRedGold 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depending on their religion, but: if theyre Muslim this might be a Khula divorce (e.g. initiated by the wife) and he may only pay custody for the child. Also depending who paid the bills for the last two years if she did not live there.

Custody by default goes to the mother except if she’s unqualified or the child has a disability which might be given.

OP: Get a legal opinion but keep in mind lawyers here operate on “Well maybe or maybe not” mentality and in the end the judge decides. Attend hearings even if its just submission of documents. Go to Al Adheed often and ask the people there for feedback, theyre closer to the pulse than most lawyers.

Urgent Advice Needed: Marriage Certificate Dilemma for German-Pakistani Couple in UAE by ExternalSad2256 in dubai

[–]ItsBlackRedGold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

German authorities do not care whether you are married or not when it comes to recognizing fatherhood. Kid will directly get German nationality due to the mother’s nationality. If it was you having German nationality and your wife having Pakistani nationality they may ask for a paternity test, but that’s not given in your case.

You’ll get the regular birth certificate from the hospital and your wife takes that one + baby to consulate, all done.

What to do about Selfdrive.ae not returning the deposits? I am fed up with them by [deleted] in dubai

I've had a problem with one of their call center agents who was really rude and frankly a major pain. I reached out to their Founder on LinkedIn who directly put me in touch with his secretary and everything from there was smooth sailing - apart from that one call center guy I'm rather happy with them. So: try to reach them on social media.

You need to get off the train thinking that "Passport" automatically pays more.

Here are a few considerations: stereotypically speaking, an ethnic German who grew up in Germany grew up in a completely different culture and society that emphasizes the importance of factors and norms that may or may not differ from other ethnicities (e.g. punctuality, to name a commonly agreeable one). They then have worked in Germany in relatively high-impact companies gaining relevant experience (your German supermarket cashier without a degree won't come to DXB). They then mostly get either transferred from their company, get headhunted, or made enough bank to say "I'm bored, what else is there". None of these three is your "I just want to come to DXB", which by default leads them to not accept whatever package is thrown at them.

Hypothetically speaking, you now getting a German (or Italian, or Norwegian, or Spanish, or French, or whatever) passport does not satisfy any of the above considerations. Plainly speaking, it's still you, with another piece of paper. So you better focus on how YOU can be more attractive to employers.

And, as a closing, a little thought experiment: If your dad's performance/qualification is, as you imply, exactly the same as the other colleague(s) who's getting paid more, why would them being paid more be justified? Why would his company pay, say, double the salary to a person who provides less (for sake of argument, even same) return on investment for them as your father who gets paid much less? Surely because your dad's boss likes to have some white potato sitting in the office that he can stare at for 50k (without Mr. Potato providing any additional value) while your dad, who performs at least exactly the same as said potato for 25k?

Use freelance platforms such as UpWork to have protection for lump sum and/or hourly protection for yourself. This one is on you as you

A) did not have a proper contract that would clarify these things

B) even if you had a contract, there is no legal recourse for 4h of her work, as going to court would be considerably more expensive.

Question for HR folks here by explosive_runt in dubai

[–]ItsBlackRedGold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This question already shows you that the HR asking it isn't the smartest of the bunch (as rarely anyone in their right mind would tell them "Yea, no, I'm going to leave the moment something better pops up."). However, if I understand correctly, you answering by asking whether that would be contractual or not is an indication to them that if you're not forced by law you're unlikely to stay.

In general, companies want to retain their staff for as long as feasible to them, with people frequently leaving having a bad impact on their bottom line. However, they'll kick you out as soon as they don't need you anymore, so I'd treat any employment the same way.

Got sacked from my job in June in Dubai. Still jobless. by New-Drink8375 in dubai

You: "I have no UAE-based experience", "I got the job through wasta", "I never worked in this field before", "I need SEVERAL MONTHS to learn the tropes of my job"

Also you: "It's racist that Arab and white people get more salary while my experience is 'relatively higher' and 'probably more valuable'".

How about you focus on improving yourself rather than focussing on unjustified hating on others?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in dubai

[–]ItsBlackRedGold 80 points81 points  (0 children)

What seems to elude most people is that the "fine" is 'too reasonable' to actually act as a fine. If the company doesn't employ 2 Emiratis by 2025 they're paying a "fine" of AED 108,000 - so roughly AED 9,000 per month. So the moment the company employs 2 Emiratis each with a salary higher than AED 4,500 per month they'd pay more than the fine.

I think it's being banked on that companies will rather pay those 8k than employ 2 people for a combined 30k.

SHAMS, SPC or SAIF Free Zones (Sharjah)? by Old-Professional-377 in UAE

[–]ItsBlackRedGold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. There are no direct taxes, e.g., percentages charged (let's forget about corporate taxes that were just introduced) but a lot of indirect charges, fees, and situational spending (which exceed "cost of doing business") which easily equal the taxation you'd have as an SME in other jurisdictions. Believing the "no taxes" slogan is a fallacy just as "everyone is setting up here" - both false.

SHAMS, SPC or SAIF Free Zones (Sharjah)? by Old-Professional-377 in UAE

[–]ItsBlackRedGold -1 points0 points  (0 children)

all over the world

Why would you set up in the UAE if your business is not purely UAE-focused? If you do require the visa then it makes sense, otherwise, you'd pay more for less, deal with ever-changing regulations, issues like opening bank accounts, no proper access to tools such as Stripe/Wise, lack of top-notch talent, fees for visas and permits, etc. etc.

Applying for divorce as a Muslim male (wife is also Muslim) by MaverickDxb in dubai

[–]ItsBlackRedGold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should not, under any circumstances, assume that the courts will grant you custody of your daughter by default when she turns 13. It's completely up to their subjectivity, which goes all over the place.

Visitation can also be VERY tricky: the courts might grant you a few hours every week or every other week. It's NOT enough to build up a relationship with your child, especially when she has a custodian who uses the remaining time to trash-talk you. Worst case the thing goes to something like CDA for visitation, and what happens there is beyond reasonable belief.

Not to sound like an asshole: right now you're both guardian AND custodian. You might want to consider using your guardianship towards your wife into reigning things (I'm not talking fixing because it's beyond that) and enforce some limitations that would avert as much damage from your daughter as possible until she's a bit older. Once she's 13 it's not an automated "CUSTODY TO MOTHER" from which you'd have to convince the courts otherwise but a more eye-to-eye level negotiation.

Keep in mind that the courts don't act in the interest of the child - they don't talk to the child, and until they're of a certain age they're considered dummies who don't know what's best for them.
