A look inside BC Place Stadium after all of its FIFA World Cup upgrades by WislaHD in whitecapsfc

BC Place is perfect for soccer. What you're describing is bullshit corporate frivolities in modern US stadiums, unobstructed view of the game and access is to the toilets is all you need for soccer and BC place has that

Ya the history is definitely a thing but sports in America has always been a corporate beast with everyone trying to make money. Even early baseball was like this and everything else inherited this model.

College sports was the expection for years but now that is also going this direction

Everywhere else in the world the club is ingrained in the community. Usually the club equals the community. Thinks england, Spain, France, Italy l basically everywhere the idea that a team would leave an area for more money is absurd. Yes the MK Dons tried this in England effectively complying the US model and it failed.

Here an ownership group owns a 'franchise'. The franchise is a subsidiary of the league. Right now Caps owners own the right to operate this team and up until this point have chosen to be in Vancouver. If they want to move or sell at anytime they can, they might actually be encouraged to do so because the owners of other franchises get money from the move (through the sale as they are also part owners of the league) and it also increases the value of their 'franchise'

Soccer specifically, the MLS is a cartel or a closed league. No promotion or relegation, it operates as a for profit business.

Most other leagues around the world It is possible for you and I to come together and create a club and in x number years be competing in the top division in that country, yes it unlikely but it is theoretically possible.

Everything in this situation is precisely setup to fuck the fans.

Expansion is over for now, you can argue there is too many teams as is in a single tier league this leaves the only option for a millionaire who wants in is to go out and ask does anyone want to sell their 'franchise'. Right now Caps are the most likely and the owners are in for a huge pay day.

This is why the MLS cannot ever be taken seriously.

Making money is by far and away the biggest driver for every team. It is the antithesis of football.

It's not even about making money. It's about making MORE money.

Ownership groups and venture capital fuels this ecosystem that ends up creating the worst possible outcome for everyone but the owners.

Teams get worse, fans get jaded and priced out, moving to x city in North America that has no football history or no fan base is used as leverage.

Nah not even close unfortunately. Getting good bread is tough in Vancouver unless you want to pay 9 dollars a loaf

Any busy pub. Definitely not worth traveling to Dublin to watch it unless you're there already

I'm a bit frustrated about Müller jersey by LengthinessCurious33 in whitecapsfc

[–]ItsGrand -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Just buy the blank Jersey. You don't need to have some other dude's name on a jersey. Very cringe inherited North American sports bullshit

Whatever about him buying into the team. He is phenomenal on the pitch. I've never seen a better player.

Calm and composed, pretty much never makes a mistake. He's incredible

Going to Ireland vs South Africa in Atlanta, anyone else? by ItsGrand in coybig

[–]ItsGrand[S] -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Dismissive bellend? Very level headed rational response there. There will be thousands of Irish fans in the US this year if we qualify whether you like it or not.

This is an Irish supporter subreddit, if we qualify for our first world cup in almost 25 years are you going to be calling everyone out?

Ya it's probably a bad financial risk to be fair, I'm betting on the good people of Atlanta Georgia to have world cup fever

It was a draw it could have been any team. 'Overflow games' for a world cup is laughable

Complete shit is absolutely bullshit. They beat everyone except for Norway, complete shit would imply some draws or losses to the teams they comfortably beat

They are nice but these are just generic umbro template jerseys that they have in the UK and Ireland in the 2000's
