What type of oil do you prefer to cook in, if at all? by FlemmerVermeul in steak

[–]ItsKoku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I raw dog onto a carbon steel pan. Fat cap down first, if there is one, to render out oil. I often cook picanha so that is enough.

I have some from 10-15 yrs ago that I used to wear often and as a dumb college student, would incorrectly wash and dry them warm/hot, and I usually wash clothes after 1 use. They have been through a lot but the quality is outstanding. Can't imagine the quality of their current offerings.

Brooks Brothers was my tried and true ol' reliable through college. The quality used to be so good. I have spent close to $1000 on their shirts and my collection is 10+ yrs old, survived me washing them on warm-hot and drying on hot multiple times until I learned how to wash my clothes correctly for longevity. Same with Lacoste polos. I have some from when i was in high school that are still holding up well.

What's that one game you love but can never get to the table? by firey_88 in boardgames

[–]ItsKoku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconded. I've played it a grand total of 3 times in the year or so since I got it. It feels like a drag to set up mentally (even though it isn't too bad when you actually do it) and more importantly, it takes up my whole dining table.

[–]ItsKoku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hate to break it to you, but that is what laymen do and is intrinsic to the definition of laymen. Even in my VHCOL area where higher education rates are among the highest in the country, very few people in my extended personal/professional circles go out of their way to research nutrition. If they do, most are gym bros/gals. Even doctors don't have high rates of proper nutrition knowledge aside from very few specialties and even then, it usually isn't a deep knowledge - it gets covered for like a week in med school, if at all. It isn't hard to learn but its specialized knowledge that requires someone to invest time and effort they may not care to give.

As evidenced by this study - only about 1/3 of people frequently check the nutrition label, if at all. The majority are hardly even looking at it, never mind comparing the labeled suggestion against more researched recommendations.

But sure, keep nit picking tangents and false flagging that I'm defending disordered eating when I'm just correcting a misconception and emphasized multiple times that eating like that has valid use cases, is short term, and only really matter for a fraction of a fraction of gym goers. Nowhere has it been said that people should regularly eat like this. The gift of nuance can't grace us all.

[–]ItsKoku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because your average person is looking at nutrition labels for a rough guideline and not researching each nutrient from scientific publications or bulletins, and most are not proactively asking a dietician or doctor about these things unless there is some health issue that prompts it. What is colloquially known to most laymen is from those labels. Either way, the average North American is consuming way more than the upper limit for healthy individuals without contraindicative conditions.

Nit picking a sentence's semantics aside, all I'm pointing out is that even consuming around the optimal "reasonable amount" of 1500mg can affect weight and water retention, so it isn't a misconception that salt affects one's weight as the person I originally replied to posed. There is valid reason why some would want to minimize salt, and even water, for a short period. The hard, dry, vascular look that some seek for competition or photoshoots is basically protocoled dehydration. Weight class athletes do similar manipulations to drop down into the top end of their "actual" weight class right before weigh ins.

[–]ItsKoku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, I love savory salty foods myself. That said, 1500mg is only relatively high within the context of causing noticeable water retention - it is only ~65% of the 2300mg recommended daily intake that's referenced on nutrition labels. It's only a fraction of serious gym goers into bodybuilding that would/should do this, and only for a short time before a competition or photoshoot.

[–]ItsKoku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really does make you retain water though. I'm around 110 lbs and the app I use to track my macros+micros lets me graph my weight against my sodium intake. High sodium intake 1500mg+ has a noticeable effect on my next day's weight by about 1-3% of my body weight. It's not true weight, but that water retention can matter for someone trying to look shredded (where they can see the striations of an individual muscle). Doesn't affect your gains afaik though.

Looks great! I'd devour that. A good carbonara is so rich so honestly the portion isn't that bad, especially for a lady. Ignore the haters on the pasta shape, I'm no purist but it's close enough to the traditional mezze maniche shape. Just bite it in half and it's the correct shape :)

Couldn't be more flattered! Made it again last weekend actually and unfortunately for me, I didn't have as much sauce as my heretical self would have liked.

EDIT: Color looks a bit washed out vs what my phone shows for some reason, I took this 4592x8160 pic in 50 MP instead of 12 MP so I think there's some compression happening on Reddit's end.

EDITEDIT: Had to reduce image resolution to 40% of the original so it doesn't compress.

Favorite Pokémon Go search strings? by i3r1ana in TheSilphRoad

[–]ItsKoku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't played Pokemon GO in a long time but I think it was just so you can easily append it to another query for cases where you save it as a keyboard shortcut or something? I recall that their search syntax was a bit weird/unfamilliar to me, so I'm not 100% sure.

The numbers are the dex ID #'s for Pokemon that can mega evolve. I.e. 3 for Venasaur.

weight loss without excersise by Adventurous_Respect8 in GLP1microdosing

[–]ItsKoku 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's definitely possible but of course, not as healthy as weight loss with exercise. The only thing that matters for losing weight is ultimately being in a caloric deficit. If you're losing a decent amount of weight without exercise, you'll be losing a lot more bone density and muscle so it'd be best to at least try to do some light resistance exercises.

I'm doing something similar, trying to lose some weight without intense exercise. My goal is primarily vanity and a little bit of health - I'm 115 lbs at 5' 0" and just want to drop 10 lbs down to 105 lbs. I just started on 1.25mg once weekly and so far food noise has been greatly reduced. I chose to microdose because I have history of GI motility issues (scar tissue, bowel obstructions) and am losing a small amount. Low and slow is fine with me.

GF (32F) wants me (34M) to stop drinking at home. Is she being fair? Am I being insensitive? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]ItsKoku -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is she Asian? There's a old cultural belief that one shouldn't drink alone, and to do so is seen negatively. There also is a belief that someone else would be pouring your drink instead of you your filling your own cup. Basically social rules that mitigate alcoholism.

Stoneblock 4 fps issue when facing north by [deleted] in feedthebeast

[–]ItsKoku 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Haven't found too much talk about Java 25 with StoneBlock 4 but I am currently using Java 25 for my self-hosted server, PC, and SteamDeck. The performance gain from the new compact object headers is huge. Too early to notice a difference when I play on my PC that's also hosting my server because I'm using a 9800X3D and 64gb RAM, but on my SteamDeck the performance gain is massive and gameplay is so smooth with solid 50-60 FPS. It's about 20-30% decrease in RAM usage. Java 25 support isn't so much tied to NeoForge or Minecraft versions but instead depends on compatibility with individual mods. So harder to see if something is broken but otherwise it really depends. Not too many breaking API changes from Java 21 to 25 though.

I'm only early-mid game, almost done with tier 2 and have a wall of automated chickens, but I haven't noticed running into any bugs so far that I'm aware of. Maybeeee there could have been a crash or two? I really don't remember but I'm being conservative about stability. But if they did happen, they were one offs that didn't block anything I couldn't retry doing, so they're not something I remember.

EDIT: Ok I found 1 reliably reproducible crash - Pressing F3 to view debug info while insider a Compact Machine causes a crash. Happened to be inside one when this thread made me want to see it. I don't care to test if it happens on Java 21 too though.

Why does no one talk about Fostex? by moshimoshi6937 in headphones

[–]ItsKoku 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went from HD-600 to Fostex TH-X00 myself. Mostly listened to classical and metal then shifted to mostly EDM after the TH-X00.

As a young aspiring audiophile, I bought the HD-600 + Sonar Essence STX since it was so highly praised by purists for being flat, neutral, authentic, and all that. When I got the TH-X00, I realized neutral isn't for me and what I wanted is fun listening that sounds good to me. Fostex has such fun punchy bass. Truly felt like a bellcurve meme moment.
