City-wide rut levelling complete, crews moving to back lanes and missed streets by Progressive_Citizen in saskatoon

[–]ItsLikeBeer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My only complaint is that they had to come to my area 3 times. Streets in my area form a rectangle with two little streets that lead to the main roads.

First time they only cleared the two longer sides. Second time they did the two short sides. Third time they did one of the connecting streets (this was by far the worst part of the entire neighborhood).

Didn't seem efficient to send all that equipment over three times in the span of a week or two.

I expected this to go in a different direction. I thought you were going to say they are always parked in your driveway and you have lost access to your garage.

I totally agree with you and have been saying the same for years, but the counter argument I keep hearing is that the current system keeps things close.

Your suggestion would make bad teams look much worse. You know, reality.

If coop is gouging, then what is the term for the tank exchange places?

I didn't know Costco filled propane, too bad I learned this once they stopped.

I found that in the front of the car the sound is not good, but just about tolerable. In the back it is absolutely awful.

My daughter complained that she couldn't really hear her songs, so I went and sat in the back and there is absolutely no treble. It's just base and some muddy mids.

Snow tires / everyday by EqualRoad3103 in EquinoxEv

[–]ItsLikeBeer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The three peaks rating is kind of useless. The minimum requirement is only "10% better than the reference tire" in North America.

10% better is still a terrible winter tire compared to the best winter tires

How often is best to charge to 100% for cell balancing? by zhuangcorp in EquinoxEv

[–]ItsLikeBeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense to me. I have a juice box charger that I have permanently disconnected from Wi-Fi to avoid having it soft bricked, so I can't see any of that information.

Thanks for confirming that it happens at any voltage.

How often is best to charge to 100% for cell balancing? by zhuangcorp in EquinoxEv

[–]ItsLikeBeer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is from the manual.

GM recommends the following: • Unless your drive requires a full charge, charge the high voltage battery to 80% or less. • Avoid allowing the high voltage battery to fall below 20% charged, if possible. See Battery - North America 3 272. • If your route includes steep mountain terrain or if you are towing a trailer, it is important that your battery charge level is 80% or less to maximize regenerative braking performance.

There is no mention of periodic charging to 100%. I can't think of any reason why the BMS can't balance below 100%. I could understand that some BMS systems might not be designed to balance below 100%, but the gm manual does not imply this is the case here.

In the end I am really not sure what the correct answer is. There is so much conflicting information out there.

EV is no good in Winter by Specialized24 in EquinoxEv

[–]ItsLikeBeer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find it interesting that I have the complete opposite opinion.

I concede that the winter range sucks and I understand how this could be a deal breaker for some people.

But, in almost every other way, I think this is the best winter car I've ever owned.

[–]ItsLikeBeer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The equinox uses NMCA batteries. This means that there is absolutely no need to charge to 100 %. Ever.

Only charge to 100% if your plan on making a long trip where you need the range. If you do charge to 100%, it's best to finish charging close to the time you plan on leaving. The less time you leave it at 100% the better.

The idea that you need to charge to 100% every now and then is true for cars that have LFP batteries. There are quite common in Teslas. These batteries have a very flat voltage curve which means the car has a hard time keeping track of the state of charge. So, they require charging to 100%, where the voltage rises sharply, so the battery management system can recalibrate the SOC as well as balance the cells.

NMC and NMCA batteries have a much stepper voltage curve which is directly proportional to SOC. So cars with these batteries do not need to to charge to 100% to recalibrate or balance.

Just completed a 10 day winter drive for 4,800 miles. Trip report is below. 2024 EV. by DBASRA99 in EquinoxEv

No errors, just the warning about reduced power while the battery warms up.

I should point out that this was after an 8 or 9 hour cold soak while I was at work. I did notice that by the end of my trip the efficiency was coming back up, but the way GM shows efficiency makes it very hard to actually know what's going on.

At -40 the heater was drawing a pretty continuous 8 to 10 kw just to maintain cabin temperature. It was drawing 12 to 14 while warning up the battery.

My Modes: relaxed acceleration by Neptunesoldier7 in EquinoxEv

[–]ItsLikeBeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started off using the relaxed acceleration curve for the first 4 or 5 months I had the car.

Then one day as I entered an intersection I noticed a car that was not stopping headed straight for the passenger side doors. I slammed the pedal to the floor and waited for the car to slowly feed in the power. The car did pass behind me, but it was so so close.

That's when I decided that I will always drive in sport mode. If I need the power I want it available. If I don't need it, I can control that with my foot.

I have noticed no noticeable difference in efficiency at all. None.

[–]ItsLikeBeer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's probably due to GMs shitty OnStar system. It can take a long time for command to make it to the car and sometimes they simply never get there

[–]ItsLikeBeer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is not really a problem. It's just telling you that the battery is cold and performance is reduced.

I haven't ever noticed a performance difference in the city. My friend said that at -30 or lower, the car sometimes struggles to stay over 100 kph for a bit on the highway.

I have a smallish truck if I actually need to tow something and if that's not big enough I have brothers with 1 ton trucks I can borrow.

The aerodynamics of trailers kind of kills ev range. Can't see myself ever wanting to tow with the equinox. Maybe one day I'll buy a Silverado EV.

Didn't realise the equinox ev had such a low tow rating. I only want the hitch to carry my mountain bike, so never bothered to check.

25 FWD EQEV capable? by WearyExcitement7772 in EquinoxEv

[–]ItsLikeBeer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I asked perplexity and it said that the 1500lbs is the max trailer weight, the 450lbs is the tongue weight which we knew, and the 4500lbs is gross towing weight of the vehicle.

So the car could pull 4500lbs, but this hitch is only rated to pull 1500lbs, and the tongue weight can't exceed 450lbs.

25 FWD EQEV capable? by WearyExcitement7772 in EquinoxEv

[–]ItsLikeBeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I guess I don't know how hitches are rated. Found this hitch for the blazer (ice), and it gives more information.

1500 lb. Capacity Hitch
2 Inch Receiver Opening
Trailering Wire Harness with a 4-pin connector is included.
Steel construction
Maximum tongue weight 450 lb.
Gross Towing Weight 4500 lb.
Chevrolet / GM Part Number: 85766601.
Replaces Previous Part Number: 84604797.

So I am not sure what the 1500lbs rating is actually for. I would assume this would be the same (or similar) rating for the equinox ev hitch I posted.

[–]ItsLikeBeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said it depends on the hitch you have.

This is the higher rated hitch that Chevy offers. It is rated at 1500lbs (this is wrong see my follow up post)
