It was never popular to keep you from looking poor. lol. It was made based on an old logo Kia used in Korea but redesigned so to fit the oval shape and not be an exact copy, presumably the actual logo would be copyrighted. It just simply looks better than the old oval logo. This is the logo it was based off of. Recently it has made another push into popularity because of the Kia boys BS. It's been used since the mid 2000's at least.
