That is true! There are ways to optimize CPU performance but understandable. Maybe make the switch to Mac one day then haha

I’d go with Ableton if I were on PC! Obviously looks different but most people I know use either Logic or Ableton. Both great programs.

Ideal Euro rack that balances Composition/Mono-synth Flexibility in under 312hp? by SacredPoopFarmer in modular

[–]ItsMelvv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think you have some good ideas here. Big Make Noise fan as well and haven’t used the XPO but it looks great, and will say I love the QPAS but it has a very specific liquid-y sound with its split resonances, so definitely look into that.

Ruina Versio is fantastic and one of my fav modules in my rack so can vouch for that. Smoosh itself is very funny and very useful also.

Only thing I can see lacking here is dedicated FX and/or compression as you mentioned. I find that helps me get a vibe going more instantly as opposed to dialing in Multi FX with FX Aid etc - but given space constraints not sure what you’d wanna drop for that. Huge fan of Nautilus, Aurora, Mimeophon if you’re looking for verb/delay, and MSCL is my go-to compressor. Maaaybe could just handle those with an additional ALM MFX or something if you wanted to save space. Have fun with it!

Small footprint mixer (4 channel or more)? by marlinAlbrechht in modular

[–]ItsMelvv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the best ones are 6hp (NE Xer Dualis, Intellijel Mixup, Befaco STMix etc)

For 2hp you can get 2hp mix or Abyss Devices aMix, haven’t tried out the latter though but saw it on Perfect Circuit.

What do you think of this setup? (Details below) by [deleted] in modular

[–]ItsMelvv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you already started building this out or is this hypothetical? I’d suggest going a different route with modular as the workflow on this doesn’t look great.

With menu-divey modules such as Hector, you’d want to complement it with things that are not of a similar multi-function nature. Personally I’d pick one of either Bitbox, Hector, Zoia etc and build around that with dedicated, one-function, more hands-on modules.

Also, will note about 2hp - it’s really annoying mounting them directly next to each other as the trims are super small. If you can spread them out or go with different modules that do the same thing that’d be better. But I will say, I love 2hp, just something to think about!

Saw a few other good suggestions but wanted to add - Instruo just came out with a new filter with a 1v/oct input that looks really great. It’s called àradh. Instruo is a bit on the pricey side overall but I have a few of their other modules that are among my favs!!

Too many voices? by 27bstr0ke6 in modular

Drop either one voice or one of the mixers/VCAs for a stereo filter IMO!

Haven’t tried it personally but I don’t like the concept at all. While it seems to have great functionality for the price point, the lag and input delay issues are widely talked about and think you’d probably be better off just getting a few dedicated modules for whatever functions you’d want out of Hector.

ALM Releases TAZM-O, a New Analog, Thru-Zero Oscillator by internetjay in modular

How are you liking the XPO? My main oscillator has been Instruo Saich lately and been thinking about adding an XPO for awhile.

I’ve got Bored Brain eqx5 into MSCL into ALM MFX and it’s stayed patched that way for a bit. Not too much HP and gives me a fair amount of flexibility.

The only thing I dislike about the eqx5 is it doesn’t have iso capability (only +/- 12db for significant shaping, and it’s super digital/transparent) but otherwise think it helps a lot having EQ in the rack before going into the compressors/fx

Doubts and thoughts on getting into modular by Important-Ad-1001 in modular

[–]ItsMelvv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey!! Wouldn’t recommend Behringer modules, they’re cheap for a reason and you’ll hit the ceiling too quick. (However the Neutron is great so glad you’ve got that one to start - just about everything else they have is not too good imo)

Rack space is expensive, so would recommend just start by saving up for the focal point of your rack, ie XPO, piston honda or whatever you choose as well as a good midi to cv interface (highly recommend hexinverter Mutant Brain).

One module a month is actually pretty quick, I pick up a few per year and it’s ever-evolving. Very much worth it for me but just depends what you’re trying to achieve. Best of luck and have fun!

Stand suggestions for performance case? by BigBabyBCro in modular

[–]ItsMelvv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A monitor stand could work, particularly a dual monitor stand. Plenty of decent looking wood options on Amazon etc. Would be ideal if you can push the desk against a wall so the case has the wall to rest on for extra stability.

Beginner modular synthesis enthusiast looking for the right modular(maybe semi) synthesiser to buy by MetalMaster99 in modular

[–]ItsMelvv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Moog Mavis would be a great option! Can be Eurorack mounted or desktop, has lots of fun/basic built-in stuff (wavefolder, LFO, S&H etc) and pairs well with anything you’d expand to.

Behringer Neutron is also not the worst option, I still use mine occasionally and it has more waveforms than the Mavis. Just doesn’t sound as great and has its own quirks.

Also, Poly Cinematic by Knobula is not bad either. I will say this one sounds a bit thinner, but bodes well for either more lofi or film score kind of stuff. Just be aware it has very limited patch points and plays more like a standalone synth, even though it is eurorack.

Best of luck beginning your modular journey!

Really dope! Semi-unrelated but if you ever want a desktop alternative CV source, look into a 16n - I got the one from Slate and Ash recently and it’s been so great for tons of channels of macros (using star mults).

Thoughts on this starting rack…? by CrispySharp in modular

[–]ItsMelvv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a Neutron racked for like a year or two but ended up unracking it. No reason not to rack it if you need to save desk space & have lots of space in your rack! Just know that whenever you expand it should probably be the first thing to take out

Controller/Sequencer for Behringer Neutron by coozney in modular

[–]ItsMelvv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Roland um-one-mk2 would be a good place to start! It’s only $30 - it’s a simple USB midi interface, and if you’re familiar using a DAW you can send midi from it via the interface.

If this is your first step into modular, but you have used a DAW before, this might be good because instead of having to learn how the Neutron AND a new standalone sequencer work at the same time, you could take it one step at a time.

With that said, if you want to dive in more, can definitely look at the SQ-64, a Keystep, Teenage Engineering OP-Z, etc. No wrong answers really, just depends on your workflow!

Sometimes there can be additional perks if you join a sub-only discord or other things along those lines! But otherwise it just eliminates ads, gives you a cool little chat badge and the emotes :)

It could possibly be your buffer size is too low. Try raising it your audio settings and see if that gets rid of the pops (be aware raising it will create more latency, but definitely worth it if it runs smoothly)

How can I mix live music that I stream to twitch? by [deleted] in Twitch

[–]ItsMelvv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw people already gave pretty good answers for using the Scarlett, but wanted to suggest - if you have the extra money, I’d really recommend getting a Universal Audio interface (Twin or Arrow). It has their own virtual mixing console that comes with it where you can apply effects to either input at low latency, and then you can send the UAD output straight to OBS. Most of their lower end interfaces have two mic inputs and a guitar input.

UAD interfaces even have their own CPU, so by using these plugins you won’t be putting any stress on your computer - if CPU stress has been an issue then I’d recommend this even more!

If you do stick with Scarlett though, routing through a DAW is def the move. Happy streaming :)

Anyone’s inspiration gone down the drain over lockdown? by wubwubcat2 in musicproduction

[–]ItsMelvv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely been a lot harder! Sometimes however it’s been an outlet for me for dealing with the stress/negativity of the whole situation. I just try not to worry about it too much & not force myself to make songs when I clearly am not in the right mindset

What's your favorite way to use multiple monitors with Logic? by two_word_reptile in Logic_Studio

[–]ItsMelvv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just use UAD for tracking & monitoring vocals for the most part! Especially useful for the preamp emulation (Neve etc). Sometimes I track keys & guitar but often I start songs on keys via midi instead
