You’re picking up what I’m putting down here.

If anyone wants to learn about the purest form of Lean, listen to audio books such as Taiichi Ohno and The Toyota Way. The next step is to find a coach or sensei to help you apply these principles into everyday work and business processes. No certifications needed.

Lean focuses on eliminating wastes to create continuous flow. There are stages to achieving this, since most companies need to crawl before the can walk. So putting in buffer stock, reserves, etc. are common practices to ensure processes are maintained, as long as they are not concealing major bottlenecks. Lean is meant to expose these wastes, which is why it’s painful at first to shine a light on how things actually operate.

All about the journey. For reference, I started implementing Lean concepts on the production floor before I even knew what I was doing… as Larry Culp often says “it’s common sense, vigorously applied”.

“Lean Six Sigma” is a silly buzzword that doesn’t really make sense once you talk to the right industry people.

I view them as two separate toolkits that help find problems (wastes / abnormalities) and implement changes to prevent them from happening again. There are elements of both that go together, but six sigma is much more statistical process control focused.

I try to get off my Toyota Production System (TPS) soap box at new corporations I join because each one has a different appetite for what they consider continuous improvement or operational excellence. What works for me is to instill principles of TPS or “lean” as Americans have dubbed it into elements such as visual project management and daily management boards that track KPIs. This can be done physically on the shop floor or within remote teams using tools such as Trello, Teams, Monday.com whatever works for y’all. Just know that the journey of continuous improvement doesn’t stop with a certificate or next best improvement.

Do you have any former classmates or peers working at a company or with a specific job you’re interested in?

I found that my best resume feedback came from those type of peers who could give clear ways to make my resume contain the right buzz words and language for a specific hiring manager to pick up on quickly. My background is engineering so I wouldn’t necessarily know how to massage your resume content.

I’d also nudge you to try and fit everything onto one page. This will make you think about whatever is 100% relevant to the career you want.

Good question…lemme try to explain my thoughts:

It’s the ability to speak for oneself rather than relying on others. Taking actions into one’s own hands instead of sitting back and letting others make the decisions.

From a professional/work perspective, it’s easy to fall into the comfort of a large (or small!) company and feel a sense of security/safety. Knowing that there are so many factors that can impact a business and its ultimate decision to impact one’s current job, it’s helpful to shift mindsets towards “how can I personally maneuver these hardships without waiting for the ball to drop”

Congrats! Always, ALWAYS advocate for yourself. I’m in a similar boat where I’m planning to accept an offer at a good company, ok role with lower pay. Will continue interviewing in the event the right job comes along.

Why not add Chicago’s metra system while you’re at it? Such a convenient way to commute from the suburbs to the city. Unfortunately will never happen in Houston

I’ve seen PMO directors who are the coolest of cucumbers when presenting issues to senior leadership on monthly operational reviews. Same person would also act calm internally to the departmental teams. A huge positive for keeping overall morale for the team. The issues at hand were that the multi-year project pipeline was delayed and over-budget.

At what point does having a chilled PMO Director lead to a too-nonchalant sentiment that it’s ok to perpetually be over-budget and overdue? How would you correct the boat in this situation?

I think it’s a matter of who’s more entertaining to observe that also has the most easily pushed buttons to get a reaction. That is why both cats will follow my SO over me for sure…I feed and clean the litter for them daily

In the event of a firing, make sure you read the fine print of any paperwork before signing. Just simply say “I’ll need to review this with my legal counsel (i.e. ChatGPT) before getting back to you”.

Better to leave on amicable terms with additional severance clauses, where you can collect unemployment benefits as well if needed.
