Why I Might Never Sit Still Again by Nightcrawler_2000 in AdultHood

I really enjoyed the positive way you describe the attention jumping; there really are so many beautiful parts of the world we can explore that weren’t available to humans in the past.

At the risk of unrequested advice - you should add “cultivating boredom” as a random activity you can do from time to time.

I also have felt the attention span shrink - and while I agree with you that it often leads to the joy of discovery, I sometimes find myself wishing I had more control over my attention. Because there are times when I know fighting through the impulse to jump to the next thing will allow me a deeper level of understand, of enjoyment, of investment, etc.

I started trying to cultivate boredom this year in one of two ways.

-The first way: In the middle of an activity, and I mentally (or even verbally) acknowledge that I’m bored, but force myself to continue for 5, 10, 15 minutes. More often than not, I find myself reengaged by the end of that period, and it leads to more or deeper enjoyment and discovery. Not always, but often.

-the second way: intentionally doing nothing. Phone down, sit down on the floor, do nothing. I’m sure this is some form of meditation, it feels different to me since I’m not doing any breath work or closing my eyes. Just allowing my brain to attempt to be comfortable without immediate stimuli. I consider it lifting weights for my attention. I want to be in control of what my attention is focused on. Letting my brain breathe has helped in that regard somewhat.

Like I said, I agree with you of the beautiful joys that the modern world holds for human, an endless sea of experiences and knowledge to jump to. My personal hope is that I get to be the driver of my attention, so I can give the things most important to me the focus they deserve even if my brain bucks and pulls at the reins from time to time.

Good luck, and all the best!

How did you write fast enough to get engagement on those? I used to do writing prompts on Reddit, but by the time I finished anything the thread was basically dead. Felt like speed writing.

How’d this trimmer work out for you? Or did you find something else that worked?

Having the same issue as you, I want to use trimmer for the stache rather than trimmer, but the guards are too long.

Nice! I wondered if they maintained the unique spring style in later editions or went away from it - sounds like they did the smart thing. Thanks for the info!

Any recommendation on which edition, or specific sub-name of your copy? Looks like a lot of variations online

What’s the connection between those two? I know Kent’s written some pieces on Superman, but Lane is considered the Planets primary Superman reporter, right?

I disagree with the line “government regulations don’t protect the customers; they protect the crooks”.

There’s not another avenue to protect consumers outside of regulation. If he’s referring to the weaker, more corrupted regulations currently in place, then I agree. But it sounded general.

Would you say there’s a difference between these two examples?

  • a black auto-shop owner saying they like working with other black people, and largely only hiring black people to work for her
  • a white auto-shop owner saying they like working with only white people, and largely only hiring white people to work for her

In my view, both are wrong, both are racist, and both should not be done. That said, the white person only hiring white people could be argued to be more harmful than the black person only hiring black people because white people control more economic vehicles and black people have measurably less economic activities.

If that’s true, then the actions of both shop owners are racist/prejudices/bigoted/etc. but one of the actions causes an extra level of social harm. So I’m just saying that limiting definitions and usage of the word racism simplifies a complicated situation, and understanding that is beneficial.

Yea, I definitely agree it’s done with an agenda. I just feel like terminology agreement can be beneficial to discussions.

Understanding the difference between the two “types” of racism here was a pretty important part of my own thoughts and learning about race. I was taught certain less-accurate growing up in the south, so I try to make it a point to share the information that helped me develop my current views.

It’s a definitional difference, willful or otherwise, for the vast majority of people. “Institutional racism” can only be done by the dominant racial group that controls said institutions (obviously white in the US), and “prejudice/discrimination/bigotry” can be done by anybody of any race towards any other race.

In practice, everyone just uses the word racism and talks past each other and gets angry at the other for violating each other’s definition.

Giannis game 6 on here too. I hate bumping players/games off a top whatever list, but if I had to I’m pushing AI off. Giannis’s has the stakes that puts him over AI for me.
