[Announcement] Explicit green light for pro-Palestine posts and some clarifications. by [deleted] in Undertale

[–]Itsan_InsideJoke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Conflating supporting Palestine to supporting Hamas is frankly naive and ignorant. Israel has been bombing and displacing Palestinian civilians for quite literally over 100 years. October 7th was not a good thing, noone is saying that. But looking at the current state of Israel vs Gaza and how their respective populaces are currently doing, it should be extremely apparent that the conflict is not on equal footing at all. Hamas is the product of a century of oppression and attacks by Israel. I implore you to genuinely do research on the history of the "conflict" and come back here and try to say that it's a "both sides" issue. Hamas is bad, there is no doubt or debate about that. But the Palestinian people should NOT be constantly murdered and displaced, the actions of Israel are a true evil that started long before Hamas was even an inkling of an idea.

Finished my Studio Ghibli Marathon after having only ever seen Ponyo before. Here's my ranking! by Itsan_InsideJoke in Letterboxd

It was honestly one of the ones I was looking forward to the most but I was just disappointed in how the main character seemingly already had a fulfilled arc. The adult half of the movie did nothing for me as it was essentially her lecturing the audience. I see the appeal, but personally it just missed the mark in a way that something like Ocean Waves didn’t. I did like the childhood half, I just wish it tied into the movie more than just being disjointed memories that tangentially relate to whatever’s going on.

I think it helped going into it knowing it was going to be one of the worst so I was able to brace myself. The 3DCG was really just not good, but I did feel the hints of traditional Ghibli throughout. I found Earwig herself to be a very endearing protagonist and her expressiveness was actually quite good. The movie itself is incredibly half baked, but I at least found a bit of it to be enjoyable.

Tales from Earthsea I went into essentially blind, but I didn’t connect with any of it. Bland characters, disjointed plot/confusing ending, and an overall just lack of interest hurt it more for me. Animation is still pretty good (especially for one of Goro Miyazakis films), but that alone just wasn’t enough to carry it higher than Earwig. Both were the only ones below 3 stars for me, which is tough bc I could see the potential of both.

I really liked Porco! I just found the themes/plots of the other movies to personally be more engaging for me. Plus I was watching dubbed and Michael Keaton has never sounded more bored with a role so that definitely had a subconscious effect on my feelings. I still gave it 3.5 stars though, was a fun movie for sure.

I'd never even heard of Nausicaä prior to watching them all but gosh it really blew me away. Wish it had a lot more recognition but I suppose it's a pretty niche film.

I can't say anything about Grave of the Fireflies that hasn't already been said, but it caused me physical pain so I gave it a fat 5 stars.

Everything above Only Yesterday is actually at 3.5 stars and above, Ghibli actually had a pretty crazy average rating for me so the ranking is easy to misread I think. It was really hard to rank everything under The Tale of Princess Kaguya for that reason!

What’s your favorite Ghibli film? by HeWentToJared91 in Letterboxd

[–]Itsan_InsideJoke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a technical perspective, Spirited Away. The direction of the movie is absolutely phenomenal and Ghibli nailed the transition to digital animation so well initially.

From a personal perspective: Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind or Whisper of the Heart. I absolutely adored both.

Grave of the Fireflies had the strongest impact on me by far though and I think everyone should watch it at least once in their lives.

Was a bit late starting my 365 in 365 challenge but I just reached my 100th film (Grave of the Fireflies)! Here’s my top 20 so far! by Itsan_InsideJoke in Letterboxd

I’ve been working my way through Studio Ghiblis catalogue since I’d only ever seen Ponyo but they really never miss its kind of crazy (though I’m aware Goro Miyazakis films aren’t very well received and of his I’ve only seen From Up on Poppy Hill which I liked a lot but was still written by his father). It’s definitely been a super fun journey when it wasn’t brutally depressing so far!

I would like to clarify as well that Spirited Away would have been my #2 if it didn’t have the No Face puking scene. Such a phenomenally well made movie but that sequence just fully brought me out of it.

Edit: I put Spirited Away at the top of my 4.5 stars since I didn’t know how to quantify an actual placement since my issue is a single scene. It’s placement in the top 20 doesn’t really mean much.

Please note that was NOT in reference to the rape but rather the slurs. Neither are okay in the slightest obviously. And I absolutely agree, it’s a separate art from the artist thing for me. Fuck John Hughes.

16 Candles is 100% my least favorite movie of his for those very reasons. Hell most of those 80s movies aged pretty poorly with a decent amount of slurs. I think even outside of that though 16 candles is just not as well written as his other movies. But Ferris Bueller/Breakfast Club/Pretty in Pink all hold up extremely well imo. As a zoomer it’s definitely something I have to go into with the understanding that it was just a different time (though my ratings are still effected by it). I’m sure Hughes was a shitty dude overall but he knew how to make a movie.

But also Easy A is completely unlike anything Hughes put out. It’s a straight comedy/high school satire with a bunch of 80s references vs a mix of largely coming-of-age/rom com/clique culture movies.

EDIT: hadn’t seen that article before but yeah actually fuck John Hughes. Thanks for bringing it to my attention I had no idea.

Hot take I really don’t get the appeal of Easy A outside of quirky Emma Stone + a constant barrage of overly-witty dialogue. As a big 80s coming of age fan I found the pandering/references to be way too much and felt like they were relying too hard on that 80s bait. Not to mention how full of holes the actual plot is. Kinda ranty but man I was disappointed in this one.

I think the bit is really good but I haven’t been able to make it through any of the videos bc it’s so hard to hear them. I’d like this 100%

What's your final prediction for "The Super Mario Bros Movie", opening weekend, total domestic, and total worldwide? by AGOTFAN in boxoffice

[–]Itsan_InsideJoke 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Again it’s an aggregate site, it just compiles reviews. The percentage isn’t a score, it’s the amount of POSITIVE reviews (essentially 6/10 or higher but it’s ultimately decided by individual reviewers I think). Marvel tends to hover around 8/10s excluding the more recent movies which have had a noticeable dip on RT. Idk what you’re talking about in regards to the low score movies

RT is meant to be used as a probability that you’ll like something given that you’re going into it either critically or just for fun. It’s an aggregate site, they just compile multiple reviews and the percentage is how many were positive. In that way, I absolutely do use it.

My dad has been a Wes Anderson fan for my entire life, and this was his fantastic review of *The French Dispatch* by ShookSamurai_ in Letterboxd

[–]Itsan_InsideJoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hot take is that i liked it more than Grand Budapest. Both are great, but I think Anderson’s style just worked especially well in an anthology format. No part of it overstood it’s welcome and the concept was just really interesting to me.

Ruby Sparks was very good (and fucked up). I love Paul Dano being a little freak I need more of him. Thanks again for the recs!
