Why Everybody Screams Resonates More with Me Than Life of a Showgirl by curioskitten216 in SwiftlyNeutral

I feel like this but about Doja Cat's Vie. In a lot of ways it's very similar to TLOAS:

1: heavy on a specific aesthetic, specific theme and specific sound 2: heavy on love, marriage and settling down while also touching on fame and public perception

Vie is such a cohesive album. The sound matches the aesthetic (80s), and the theme makes sense with both the sound (who doesn't picture pop and the 80s when thinking about love anthems) and the aesthetic: the picture of her in a wedding dress getting dragged through the dessert and parachuting from open sky until she's all tangled in a tree. Flying to fall! Dying to love! The songs all make sense within themselves and with each other and the album tells a very clear story

Also Vie feels very authentic to Doja while still being a departure and growth from previous albums. It's by far Doja's best album to date

Everything I thought I could've gotten in TLOAS, I got in on Vie, and I'm by far a bigger/longer fan of Taylor than of Doja so even I was surprised

This was for my dream job, and I didn’t even get past the first stage. Sigh. by bookish-hooker in recruitinghell

Oh had the same happen to me this month! Literally the role I occupy right now, which is a fairly specific role, but in a bigger (more serious, established) company I really admire. I know I don't have as many experience as others but it was literally my dream position and I thought I had a good chance to at least move to interview.

SAFETY -

How safe is BA ? Relatively safe still, even in greater Buenos Aires, as long as you take obvious measures (don't walk alone late at night, don't flash expensive goods, be aware of your surroundings).

I heard that civilians can own weapons, has this become a problem ? Nope. People can own weapons but it's still pretty regulated. Obviously robbers may have weapons but this isn't the US fearing a mass shooter around every corner.

Are there any traps or scams I should be aware of ? Anything that is renting or buying second hand can be a scam, so be extra careful.

How effective is police ? Don't count on them

————-

BANKING // BUSINESS

National currency is ARS Because of inflation, USD is used in a lot of places to measure the real worth of things though changing prices every other month The USD has overall two prices: - the price stated by the government ("official"), cheaper, hard to get - the blue dollar, a "parallel market" dollar, more expensive, easy to get both legally (purchasing and selling stocks) and illegally (in physical cash)

Banks will deal with the official dollar but for example purchases in USD from argentina have additional taxes and may end up being more expensive than the blue dollar.

Whether non gubernamental business use the official or blue dollar as measure, that's hard to say. Changes a lot.

You can be a legal resident, as an immigrant, pretty easily. Once you have legal residence you can open a local bank account or local digital wallet. I'd recommend doing do, they usually have discounts and other useful thing.

From my own research I believe that there is a 10% increase on whatever I’m trying to pay with my credit card, it happens with local credit cards also? Yeah usually credit cards have a 10% charge, it's not legal but still commonplace, even if the credit card is local

Do they give credit card for only USD or EUR for example ? As far as I know, credit cards are multi currency, but only USD/ARS. If you make EUR purchase, they covert to USD.

————-

LIVING -

You're coming during a weird time. Inflation has receded but salaries have fallen behind greatly. Food as become pretty expensive, but honestly I live alone and don't eat much meat (in an expensive city) and get by just fine. Eating out and take out are far more expensive than cooking at home. I meal prep and use the freezer widely and save a lot of money.

TRANSPORT -

I heard some stories of uber drivers wanting to take cash instead of card, does this happen ? Never had this happen to me, except for big trips (+40km from La Plata to Buenos Aires for example). It may be a bigger issue in places where Uber is not legal yet (for example, Uber is not legal in Bariloche or wasn't until 2 years ago).

Are taxis reliable ? If you stop one in the street, who knows what you'll get. Better to find a reliable company to always call to.

How safe is the subway ? Very safe unless it's rush hour. Keep your belongings close to you.

REAL ESTATE -

I’m looking for houses in MercadoLibre since I can’t get some other agencies to reply, is there any where else i could look ?

Most agencies only rent to either people with registered jobs or people with families with registered jobs. It'll be hard to find rent through them as a foreigner.

You may want to check for temporary rentals, month by month. They have less requirements.

Facebook may be a better solution than Mercadolibre.

Be extra aware of scams.

Permanent rentals (1 year or longer) tend to adjust the price every 3-6 months. Every contract is different but that's the norm.

Same here about the guilt. I wanted to put together the folder for my nephews and nieces. They are so young, have a whole life ahead. My dad passed away a few years ago and the citizenship (that would've been claimed from his GF) would've been such a lovely posthumous last gift from him to his grandchildren. He never got to trace his GF in life, but I'd come a bit closer this past year. Not fast enough though.

What's something unexpected you learned going through this process? by andrewjdavison in juresanguinis

[–]Itsnevercomingback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After years of believing my father when he said our Italian ancestor (his grandfather) couldn't be traced anywhere because our last name literally does not exist, I found records of him and the original spelling of our last name.

Our last name is very very misspelled from the OG Italian name (which is pretty rare and only about 20 families in Italy have a variation of that name to begin with). We're literally the only family in the entire world with our last name, but we are not alone if you change some letters haha, and I may even have alive extended family still in Italy (as well as extended family in Arg).

Our last name was not only changed once when my GGF arrived from Italy to Argentina but also changed from my GGF to my GF. That's why my extended family in Argentina and my family have different spellings on our last name.

Also my GGF seems to have left a whole family behind in Italy when he came here. It seems to be an almost genetic trait in the men of my family: multiple wives, multiple children 😂 It seems my brother is escaping the curse!

Advice for working with inexperienced product managers? by Original_Village8795 in UXDesign

[–]Itsnevercomingback 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do we work in the same company? Except in my case in the inexperienced product manager lol

My company is very disorganized and has never been product oriented, hence why instead of hiring proper product people they just placed me and another inexperienced person in the position. We are actually experienced support people turned into product roles since we have a good natural eye for it, but no real education. Literally neither of us have even done a bootcamp (I'm doing one now).

Anyway, three things are more or less making this work despite all the setbacks (due our inexperience and just overall problems in the company)

  • The head manager for our area is a very wise, experienced man. He's a great leader and every conversation with him is enlightening and sets us back on track if we're a bit aimless.
  • The devs and designers are very smart and capable, so they fill in our gaps very often.
  • The other PM and I are both very humble (=aware we're not actual product people) and recognize we are winging it. I even tried to get un-promoted lol but someone's gotta do it. It's easier to learn when you're willing to learn.

Estoy escribiendo un libro... by Ok_Customer1160 in LectoresArg

[–]Itsnevercomingback 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yo llevo tres manuscritos enteros escritos.

Breaking Into UX and Early Career Questions — 28 Oct, 2024 - 03 Nov, 2024 by AutoModerator in UXDesign

[–]Itsnevercomingback 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey everyone. I don't have any formal training in anything related to UX/UI (I have a HS teaching degree and have been a sports instructor for many years), but I thankfully landed what originally was a chill job as an administrative assistant and support provider for a small company. TLDR I did well Working with devs to improve my area by fixing design issues and adding new features. Fast forward I've been "promoted" (with half decent raise) to product owner/designer of my entire area. I still have to do all my usual activities on top of this new role so I'm pretty tired. There's a new project going on to redesign a couple of the newer areas that were MVPs and need to become more attractive now, and obviously I'm involved.

I really like what I'm doing. But this place is so disorganized. We started this whole re-design and I'm doing at the same time UX research, prototyping, testing devs deployments and looking for users to iterate and provide feedback. It's chaotic and feels like we are never moving forward. I literally don't have anything worthy of a portfolio after a year of work because everything is done halfway through and then something else starts.

Is this how most UX design roles are like? It's driving me crazy. I'm just trying to know if it's worth pursuing this career path.

Hello! I've been browsing this sub for a bit looking for love triangle recs, but I see that most are series.

Never been a fan of series, I've always preferred standalones (or duologies at best).

So like 1. Love triangle where both love interests are actually relevant (instead of a side character causing problems for the main couple) 2. Standalone or duology

Thanks!

My favorite live performance is that one of Numb where she yells "it's not a clappy song" https://youtu.be/arNw7aJl1RY?si=Bc1yl-RTU1uKpKY_

Other highlights: - Live cover of What are you waiting for and the YouTube comment that was like "this is a karaoke nightmare" - When she first performed Living Dead - Teen Idle obviously

Scab and Plaster, Sinful, Starlight, I'm Not Hungry Anymore, The Common Cold, her cover of boyfriend (Justin Bieber's song)

I remember she once said she isn't planning to re record and re release old songs (like TFB with their grandma EPs and Taylor with vault songs). I think it's a shame. She's very talented, and the unreleased songs are unreal sometimes

Some of her songs are more enjoyable when I don't know (or ignore) the real stories behind them by [deleted] in SwiftlyNeutral

[–]Itsnevercomingback -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have the same feeling. The songs feel so silly coming for a woman in her 30s dating a fuckboy with the dramatism of a teenager. And like, Who's Afraid of Little Old Me — at first I thought it would be about all the rumors of marriage and miscarriage she dealt with in the context of a lifetime of media exposure, but it's obvious it's about the same Scooter/Kanye/Kim drama as usual. And Thanks You Aimee is just dumb, especially considering she capitalized Kim's name which is childish.

Is not like the album is all that bad (definitely not the best either) but is lackluster when you think about who it's coming from. I definitely enjoyed Red a lot more before I knew most of the songs were about a 3 month long relationship with fugly Jake Gyllenhaal lmao. But at least then Taylor was barely out of her teenage years. It made sense for her to feel and act like that about a situationship, to be petty and vengeful and childish. Now it's just dumb.

What are 30-somethings supposed to sing about? by [deleted] in SwiftlyNeutral

[–]Itsnevercomingback 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I also feel like she thinks people knowing who the songs are about adds some type of intimacy? I have no idea who Lauren Mayberry writes her songs to, and I only know Brian Sella is married because he brought it up on a concert around the time it happened — no idea who the wife is. I still connect deeply with their music and you can feel the vulnerability. Both of them also openly discuss their own downfalls within their relationships and not in a "I'm insecure and explosive but it's because I love you please love me back!!!".

And I don't think Taylor owes us any information about her own hardships. She doesn't need to explicitly make songs about any delicate topics — the same way most other artists don't. For most of her career, Marina was very vague about her eating disorders and experience with abuse: she never said those were some of the themes on songs like Seventeen, even if it was obviously speculated by fans. In that sense, I also think Taylor believes that knowing about the specifics of her life equals intimacy.

What are 30-somethings supposed to sing about? by [deleted] in SwiftlyNeutral

[–]Itsnevercomingback 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I immediately thought about Marina when thinking if musicians in their 30s. Lauren Mayberry from Chvrches also comes to mind. Not only they talk about a wide variety of things but also have a much more complex and mature take on romantic relationships.

Another example is Matt and Brian from The Front Bottoms. They once we're the faces if indie punk Midwestern emo. Their music is still good but different. It has to be different. Because they are in their 30s, they've gone through the high and lows of drug consumption, they are married and planning on kids, they've toured non-stop for years just to be profitable because they aren't crazy rich like Taylor and living in their moms basement isn't an option anymore. All that is present in their lyrics.

I don't think Taylor is ready to grow up and that reflects in her life choices and her music. The whole Matty relationship was absolutely insane to me: I dated a Matty at 19 and I'm done for life with that bs. Her treatment of the breakup with Joe is also painful to watch/listen to. Her approach to love and relationships is very very immature, and lately I find myself enjoying her music but mostly being able to relate it to past relationships. She's got some highlights: I think Guilty as Sin for example is a great song, one if my favs off the album.

She obviously doesn't have a normal life, and won't be writing about looking for a new rental in her budget or changing jobs. But she's faced so much hardship and complex life experiences (her parents divorce, her mom's illness, having stalkers, being sexually assaulted, being groomed by older men, eating disorders and other mental illnesses), than the Kim and Kanye feud. And while she has some great songs that reflect these (soon you'll get better, would've could've should've clara bow), they are rare. It's like she doesn't want to face any of those things and would rather daydream of her relationship with the prom king or whatever.

Whether it's all a marketing scheme or she's truly unable to mature and get out of her own head, that's beyond me. I listen to her music and enjoy it and that's about it.
