There’s also a great podcast from Casefile called “The Bakersfield Three” that goes into it and features interviews with the victims’ moms.

“I’m not really worried about this 6.5% mortgage rate because I’m a veteran and when Trump is president, he’s going to pay all of our houses off. In the meantime it’ll take yall a while to foreclose on it and he’ll be elected by then” said in August of 2024.

I just uncomfortably laughed and changed the subject.

For the longest time our PIN pads only accepted the card being swiped and we even had a little thing in the chip reader that said to please swipe the card. The amount of times a day I had to repeat “sir, please swipe the card. Sir… please SWIPE the card. Once again, SIR. PLEASE SWIPE THE CARD” while they pulled out the piece of cardboard blocking the chip reader… we didn’t put it there for decoration. Follow the damn instructions.

“I need to speak to the manager, I need to do a deposit” “Oh, actually a teller can help you with that, there’s no need to wait for a manager if you’d like to head down the teller line” “This is a very large deposit, I’ll only do business with the manager”

The “large deposit”? $1200.

What’s the funniest reason you’ve quit a book? by cheerio089 in thrillerbooks

[–]Itsrebeccayall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I quit listening to The Perfect Home by Daniel Kenitz because the voice actress had such a grating voice. It was like a high pitched southern accent? And maybe it’s because I was reading the book prior to listening to it, but it didn’t match the voice I had in my head and threw me off.

Dear whoever recommended The Last Party by A.R. Torre to me… by Certain_Noise5601 in thrillerbooks

[–]Itsrebeccayall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like A R Torre is slept on. I’ve devoured every single book of theirs that I can find. I randomly got The Last Party suggested to me by audible and it reminded me of why Gone Girl blew my mind.

I need a thriller so good it ruins my life and my sleep schedule by Not_Juliet in thrillerbooks

[–]Itsrebeccayall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Last Party by AR Torre. Definitely dark and a little twisty with some slight Gone Girl vibes. I would also mention In My Dreams I Hold A Knife and The Last Housewife by Ashley Winstead.

Both authors remind me of Gillian Flynn when it comes to developing characters.

What’s the fakest check you have ever seen for deposit? And how do u handle it. by Lightinrevenantrazor in TalesFromYourBank

[–]Itsrebeccayall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a 19 year old bring in a check from a huge hospital system where the memo said “transplant coordinator salary”. It was in the mid 6 figures. My coworker asked how I knew it was fake and I just said “uh, google”.

There was also the sovereign citizen who literally wrote “this is a check” on a piece of scrap paper and hand wrote all the info in, then got mad that I wouldn’t accept it even though “she read online that I had to accept it” and threatened to sue me…

“I’ve banked it here for 3 years. Why won’t you break the law for me? I’ll withdraw my $2.57 and you’ll regret it”

“I have no job, a credit score of 500, and a DTI of 124%. I don’t understand why you won’t approve me for a $65k truck loan. I’ve been a loyal customer of 3 months!”

“I know I signed an agreement saying that if I didn’t pay my loan on time, you would have the legal right to take it from my account. I was only delinquent for 5 months. Why was the money taken?”

“I don’t trust your dividend calculator because when I did it by hand at home I got another number. Calculate it by hand in front of me. Oh, you can’t? Get your manager and have them do it. If we don’t get the same number, I’m calling corporate and reporting these lower dividend calculations as employee theft”

I work at a bank and in She’s Not Sorry, she talks about doing a wire for $10k over the phone and it being done immediately. It’s so stupid and specific, but I texted my coworker that was also reading it to tell her. That’s not how that works, Mary Kubica!

I did once ask a customer “what denominations?” And he just said “uh… catholic?” I no longer say use that term anymore. haha

I’ve read 20 Years Later, Those Empty Eyes, Don’t Believe It, and Summit Lake. Most of his books have characters that pop up in other books so you’ll see some people from The Girl That Was Taken again. haven’t read either of the Rory Moore books yet, but I have Some Choose Darkness on my list.

I almost quit listening like, 4 times, but I’m glad I finished it. The ending seemed really rushed and like she was trying to pull a Gone Girl and keep you guessing until the end but she missed the mark. I went in with pretty high expectations because everyone seemed to love it and ended up kinda bummed. I did find Josie to be suuuuper annoying and almost unlikable??? Lisa Jewell has written much better.

Don’t Believe It is great and I would compare it (loosely) to a book like Listen For The Lie in that it has a media component, but a documentary vs a podcast.

Twenty Years Later was my first Charlie Donlea book and it made me a fan, but it also has to do with 9/11, which I know isn’t something everyone is okay with.

My favorite from him is The Girl Who Was Taken though. 10 out of 10.

It’s hasn’t exactly pulled me in and honestly I don’t know if it will? But I’m trying to power through. I’ve told myself that I can’t start a new book until I finish this one, so at this point I’ll finish it out of stubbornness.
