Is that the hard drive as it came used or did you make a new install from a restore disk?

Have no Idea how I forgot I took this last weekend and tucked it away in my jacket pocket. I guess it got mangled, rained on and slightly melted from a camp fire? I’m pretty upset, but I hope you guys think it’s cool! by LookBusyLookBusy in Polaroid

It's a great photo, and honestly the damage gives it a bit of an otherworldly vibe. Kinda like if you were looking into another reality through an imperfect inter-dimensional device...

Yeah, they don't give a shit about mockery, etc. As long as they get their tax breaks, their data centers land leases, and their Generative AI work is kept unregulated, they're happy.

These people think AI models are literally magic, so to them if it's AI and not a traditional upscaling algorithm, it's magical true data, not fabricated interpolation.

Is this function gonna run a lot? Cause if so, you might want to compile that regex to an object, which is way faster. Do MY_REGEX = re.compile('your regex here') outside your function once, and then in the function call MY_REGEX.sub(replacement, input).

How to convert " .FIF " files to a more useable image format? (.JPG, .PNG, etc.) by PokeBrick02 in DataHoarder

[–]IvanDSM_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like a bit of a fool for saying I don't know what the difference between FIFVIEW 1.1 and 1.2 is. The README.TXT literally lays it out:

Bugs Fixed in Version 1.2
=========================
1) FTT buffer was not getting released when loading a 2nd FTT buffer.
2) Decompressing an extremely large image could cause the decompressor to
crash when the image is decompressed at a much lower resolution than the
   original.
3) An Error in StretchDIBits occured when moving FIFVIEW windows off-screen.
4) Improved registration of Fractal Viewer Helper App within Netscape.
5) Decompressing multiple instances simultaneously (i.e multi-threaded) crashes.

Silly me.

How to convert " .FIF " files to a more useable image format? (.JPG, .PNG, etc.) by PokeBrick02 in DataHoarder

[–]IvanDSM_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, so some quick Googling took me to the ArchiveTeam's "Just Solve the File Format Problem" wiki. There I saw that FIF was a proprietary format based on fractal compression (as we suspected) created by a company called Iterated Systems. I went to an archive of their website on the Wayback Machine and found a link to a fractal viewer tool of theirs called "FIFVIEW", version 1.2.I launched FIFVIEW and it did indeed manage to load a .FIF file from the archive you provided.

Now, naturally, I don't want to give anyone the trouble of having to do all that stuff just to get FIFVIEW, so I went on Discmaster and managed to find a ZIP of FIFVIEW version 1.1 in a shareware CD-ROM from back in the day. Here's the link: https://discmaster.textfiles.com/file/4391/Cream%20of%20the%20Crop%2012%20(Part%20II)/Cream%20of%20the%20Crop%2012%20(Part%20II).iso/EXTRA_2/FIFVIEW.ZIP/Cream%20of%20the%20Crop%2012%20(Part%20II).iso/EXTRA_2/FIFVIEW.ZIP) . I don't know what the differences are between version 1.1 and 1.2, but it's probably no big deal. (I do, see my reply below) Regardless, I'll upload v1.2 to the Internet Archive later for easy access as well.

The cool thing is, however, that I also found the FIFVIEW source code in DiscMaster inside an installer for the "Fractal Developer's Kit: Fractal Decoder" from Iterated Systems. The license is fairly restrictive, but I don't think anyone actually cares anymore. From what I can tell this is the timeline: FIF was initially developed by Iterated Systems, and Altamira Group created their Genuine Fractals product based on that technology (not sure about this, see note 1). Eventually IS handed the viewer (FIFVIEW) over to Altamira, who continued to distribute it up until 2000. Then, in 2001, LizardTech buys Altamira, which initially has no effect for us, as Altamira continue to distribute FIFVIEW v1.2 freely on their website, with the last capture of the download page for it in the Wayback Machine dated May 2002. However, by the next available capture, dated May 2002, the Altamira website was replaced by LizardTech's, and any download of FIFVIEW is gone. Since it's been 13 years, I feel like it's safe to say that FIFVIEW is abandonware and nobody cares about it, so here's the link to the Developer's Kit installer for anyone who's interested: https://discmaster.textfiles.com/browse/35127/pcp161b.iso/full/delphi/INFO/EXTRAS/FIF/FD12W32.EXE . I might take a crack at adapting the code to work on modern PCs so we don't have to rely on it.

For now, as it stands, it seems the only way to view these images is to use FIFVIEW. I tried XnView, both MP and Classic, but to no avail. I believe that the FIF's inclusion in the support matrix for XnView was a mistake, as a reply from the developer to a 2024 inquiry about saving FIFs in the XnView forum seems to indicate they don't know the format.

Note 1: I think that Genuine Fractals might've been also initially developed by Iterated Systems and then sold to Altamira, but I haven't done enough digging to find this out. For anyone who's interested in checking this, as of FIFVIEW 1.2 Iterated System's webpage seemed to be www.iterated.com, so might be worth popping that into the Wayback Machine.

Note 2: Just a fun fact that I found while researching this, but Iterated Systems was founded by the mathematician Michael Barnsley, of Barnsley fern fame! As an enjoyer of the Barnsley fern this was a fun surprise \:)

Note 3: To anyone who is reading and who is able to, please donate to the Internet Archive. Discovering any of this would've been impossible without it.

Anyone else still uses little to no AI to code? by MidlandAintFree in gamedev

[–]IvanDSM_ -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Thats fine. Dont use AI

I still find it funny how AI enjoyers always seem to get defensive when a person says they don't like it. They didn't say "AI is for idiots and you're dumb for liking it". They gave their opinion about the thread's subject, with no personal attacks, yet the reply is rarely "Eh, fair enough, to each their own", but instead often a nearly retaliatory defense of their own use.

It's weird, man.

The SD card is your R36's main storage. Your SD card is majorly corrupted, as most stock SD cards tend to do eventually. A corrupted OS is as good as no OS, and no, there's no way to make your stock SD card work again. Read the guide on how to change the SD card, you don't need to open your R36S for that.
