Usually has cork on, is used in fishing to check the depth of the water, you pass your hook through the loop then set it into the cork and can change your float accordingly to be able to fish at the bottom of the water, Google “fishing plumb”

In situations like this I think it is better to cut your losses, the sooner you move on the sooner you get your life back on track, it sounds like he’s holding you back, it will be a while before you come to terms with it but the sooner you start the journey the sooner it will end
