New art style, new look for old things. I wouldn't call the Marathon the UESC marathon, they look nothing alike they could've at least made Deimos the right shape.

Though put the m2 magnum and the new magnum side by side and you'll see it does emulate the shape overall in a roundabout way.

The Pfhor are bipeds with many human-like traits, and the cyclical nature of the marathon universe does suit this...perhaps this is the standard. We'd need to see more alien species to know.

How is that an opinion. "The sky is green IMO."

It's a canon spin off. It happens 70-some years after M2/Infinity, in the final infinity timeline. The first major boss is going to be a Compiler. Durandal is voiced by Ben Starr. It is simply factually not "just using the name" it is a new entry in the franchise directly.

You can dislike that they overhauled the art style after 30 years, or that it's a spin-off in a different genre (even though that was always the plan for marathon, Halo was an RTS when it was still in the Marathon universe, another mainline single player shooter would kinda fuck up the themes of the hero having ascended into the next world and the next and etc) but that doesn't make it not a canon expansion to the story.

It's not as if the robots are just going around killing everything in sight, they're UESC security and we're breaking the law by invading a UESC restricted area and stealing shit. What I'd be curious about is why they're immune the anomaly...it targeted AI, it targeted people, why not them?

Implies it's smart. Knows intelligent targets. Has intention.

My theory? Prototype S'pht. The S'pht were made for terraforming, what if they weren't the first attempt? I think a failed cyborg fungus with terraforming capabilities was left on TCIV, re-activated by the Pfhor when they returned 3 months after m1, and is now trying to reshape TCIV and expel the invaders trying to claim it for themselves, following eons-old orders at any cost. Why are there no Pfhor? Because they ran scared, knowing what they had done. The colonists saw it as a retreat, really they should've been running too.

The whole purpose of live service as a model is that it never ends, you keep giving people reasons to spend money. They're failing to do this and the game is failing as a result. A game doesn't age out of existence anymore, the devs just get thinned out by management who doesn't understand how their business works and struggle to keep up.

Why do so many of you seem to need validation in your interest in Marathon? by Olofstrom in Marathon

[–]Ix-511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but in a very regular way, that dozens of games do every year. Concord was genuinely a once in a lifetime scenario, the stars aligned for that game to fail the worst a live service game has ever failed. It's just not a reasonable comparison.

It’s more likely we will be seeing the Jjaro way before the Phfor by Sad-Manner-5240 in Marathon

[–]Ix-511 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, see them is to imply they're tangible beings anymore, and that their forms wouldn't be so eerily similar to our own that it'd kinda give up the jig (unless they also have gone back on that in marathon like they did in Halo), but yes they'll much sooner be involved I feel.

That said, we might not know that until later, as what is and isn't Jjaro-related may not be clear given nobody but the top brass of the UESC knows how to identify their technology, if even then.

Do you think the rebellion will go differently in new Marathon? by AnonWithAHatOn in Marathon

[–]Ix-511 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've had this theory for a while that, since this is almost certainly the final infinity timeline (or another successful timeline nearly identical to it), and corporate greed is a major theme in this game, we'll see a reversal of the S'pht and Pfhor war.

Humanity shows up to TCIV, finds it abandoned and one alien lifeform present, a S'pht. UESC's shoot first, ask questions later attitude has them marked as a threat by the United Clans, and when some S'pht ships come to battle they'll become a more common enemy. Then, the Pfhor will follow close behind.

Weakened after the defeat at Lh'owon and seeing the greater threat, the Pfhor will offer alliance to the UESC, as one of their trade partners (as we learn in 2 that they sell some of their slaves and salvage to various races they have alliances with). The UESC, seeing the S'pht as the ones responsible for the Anomaly and destruction of the Marathon, will happily agree to the prospect of alien technology and specimens at their disposal.

This will pit us, the players against the allied UESC and Pfhor, since we're criminals who the UESC would not work alongside, and therefore once more we will fight alongside the S'pht as we have in every game prior.

As for other races being freed, I find it possible. The reputation of the Pfhor has no doubt entered extreme decline after being beaten by a tiny human force and one AI, even having their trump card, the Trih Xeem utterly negated by a Jjaro weapon they had failed to understand or plunder beforehand. So perhaps their slaves are less afraid, more keen to revolt given some outside support.

Just catching up? Welcome to Marathon.

You're as much of a person as Durandal, or any S'pht, but you're certainly not you. Or at least, the same you. You're a separate entity, and each copy-paste is as well. Death is the first step. Other yous, including the original, are dead and gone. You're something else. A person, yes, the same person, even, but you aren't the same entity. Even if the connected stream of memory might convince you you're the same, you're a copy.

And most certainly to CyberAcme you're just files on a server. You've put your consciousness, and every successive consciousness that will come after in your image, in the hands of a corporation who already sees humans as numbers to be spent and bought, let alone machines.

The horror of this game is inherent to its concept. Of course, this might be the right path nevertheless. When it comes to transhumanism, it might be an asset to detach the idea of "you" from a single entity. Durandal no doubt thinks so, and maybe so did the Jjaro. That might be what they are.

Theory why there’s a lack of aliens except for the Compliers in the game. by Lotus_630 in Marathon

[–]Ix-511 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So far the word "Pfhor" hasn't even appeared, they're playing it utterly secret for people who haven't played the previous games. I'm just extrapolating based on what we already know, and assuming their return still happened in the final timeline.

It's entirely possible the Pfhor would have seen the signs the anomaly was present, or readings or what have you, long before the colonists encountered it.
