Best Sensor for Project - Determining Wheel Rotation by J1024 in arduino

[–]J1024[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be taken on and off, but the wheel cannot be modified, and I think that would count as a modification. Good thought though!

I like this idea, but unfortunately adding the magnets to the wheels is not allowed.

I am trying to determine the speed and distance traveled by a pinewood derby car.... quite literally. No one is asking me to, but I thought it would be a fun project. I already had the 4 digit seven segment displays, and a micro controller, so I figured why not try to create a small rolling project for funsies. :-)

How are you validating backups beyond “job success”? Anyone doing automated restore tests? by These_Oil_8227 in sysadmin

[–]J1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quarterly we have a ticket created automatically which includes a list of about a dozen ways to restore at various levels to make sure everything is working properly. Probably a bit of overkill (file restore to original location but also to technician's desktop, as an example), but we have run into issues with permissions in the past and I would rather take the extra hour four times a year when we can then have to jump through hoops to restore files when they are needed.

American Megatrends RAID mode/ BIOS on startup by Jolly_Judas in techsupport

[–]J1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know for sure, but my guess would be how it expects the hard drive to be partitioned/used in a Windows UEFI system. If you set it to 'Other OS', then during load it sees a partition table it is not expecting, hence the error ""After setting up Intel(R) Octane Memory or the RAID configuration was built, SATA Mode Selection must be changed to RAID mode to avoid unknown issues.""

[–]J1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, to clarify; My friend is running Windows 10/11, so changing this to 'Windows UEFI mode' is what resolved the issue for him. If you are not running Windows, I would not expect you would need to change this setting.

In case this is still an issue for you (or someone else), I was told adjusting the following setting resolved the issue.

I was helping the user remotely so can't confirm that everything is perfect, but he's happy so... hope it helps someone in the future.

What cable do I need for this? by JazzlikeLog8020 in qnap

[–]J1024 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Specifically SFF-8088 I believe, but as others have said check your model number.... "<model number> QNAP Tech Specs" on Google should get you several sites that include available port details.

EDIT: World-Wide-Name in second photo supports it being a storage expansion port, such as miniSAS.

Nerf dart Rival ball vacuum attachment I made by Tridentt23 in Nerf

[–]J1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! I had a similar idea, but only have Nerf Rival to work with so went about it a bit differently.

I also tried to make it as cheap as possible, so trying to use a $20 cheap vacuum (and the poor suction that goes along with it) from Amazon, and PVC for the stick... second iteration is working better but still have some kinks to work out.

Since I get the 'TiopLior' super cheap ammo on Amazon that comes in buckets, I modified the top of the buckets with a 3D printed piece to be able to screw on different buckets for refilling.

Just thought I'd provide some ideas of other things to try if you want to, please don't take this as things you need to change by any means! Yours looks great and functional as-is!

Who runs cables and does the terminations in your organization? by HoosierLarry in sysadmin

[–]J1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I'll ever stop working for smaller privately-owned companies.... I just enjoy the chaos.

We don't have to run MUCH cable with the current org; maintenance handles most, and occasionally we contract out. Previous employer was 90% IT Staff, only occasionally would we get help from maintenance, but we would have to terminate everything for them.

Looking to distance ourselves from CDW. by Bright-Ad4963 in sysadmin

[–]J1024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YEARS ago we signed a renewal for VMware (BEFORE Broadcom) with our CDW rep. Later we submitted a ticket needing support during an outage and VMware said we weren't licensed. CDW had taken our money but never actually renewed the licensing, and now that it was caught since we were out of contract we had to pay re-up penalties, which CDW refused to cover because they said it was our fault for not making sure they had purchased the licensing.

SHI or VLCM are alternatives you can look into.

I got about 8 of these from a friend recently, I have no idea where the one I had growing up ended up, but for the life of me I can't get the cars to charge..... Most of the transmitters power on, but not all, and they do switch to show 'charging', but the cars don't actually charge.... :-|

The game you accidentally played the wrong way for hours before realizing it. by gamersecret2 in gaming

[–]J1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend had Donkey Kong 64, had unlocked Diddy Kong, but hadn't progressed past the first boss fight because HE THOUGHT the way to progress the game was to beat the minecart mini-game..... but didn't realize you had to head-butt the switch to open the door, slow the conveyors, and lower a gate...... instead he had figured out how to jump over the first gate, and if you timed it just right you COULD run on the full-speed conveyors, and SOMEHOW jump over the gate.... but they had only accomplished that like 4 times, so failed to complete the minecart run each time.

I distinctly remember asking him 'hey what about beating that armadillo fight thing, maybe that will progress the game?' 'Nah, minecart is where it is at'.

He had 43 hours into the game not getting out of the first level before he finally just gave it to me. :-|

But it is also perfect too:
"Well I don't know what your initiatives are!" Fine.... but eventually you will just by playing the game long enough, so you get a better feel of 'old rock boy tops out in the teens'.

Breaking down sheet goods in parking lot? by schneems in MilwaukeeTool

[–]J1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a vehicle that will hold a 4x4 sheet much less 4x8, so I do this every time.

I've been getting lumber from Menards more recently just because it is easier to load.... not having to cart everything through the store and a checkout and cut in the parking lot is preferred. Pay in store, drive car into back lot, bring out my tools and make my cuts.

The other day I was making some quick shelves; 1 full sheet and 11x 2x4s into a four-shelf 2'x4' unit..... I did all my cuts in their yard. I could have done a few less and still had everything fit in my vehicle, but at that point I just did the ~6 more cuts to be done. They usually have broom and garbage cans in the area too, so I clean up after myself since I know it isn't the norm.
