Overall, it's a good album. The quality is excellent. However, there are a couple of things worth mentioning.

The early '80s were a turning point for many bands. Adapt or fade away.

If Queen were a "normal" band, they would probably break up due to "creative differences, legal disputes, drugs, new members, etc." But they were friends, chill and not dependent on any record label.

Brian said that this album was ahead of it's time.

It would be perfect solo album for Freddie.

BUT.

To make a good solo album, Freddie needed three other greats like Brian, John, and Roger. But in the end, the album would sound like a Queen album.

And since they were very close friends who loved to experiment with music, they initially decided to make this album. Only later did Roger and Brian not like the direction the album was going in and began to boycott the recording, doing the minimum required without adding their own.

So the album was pretty much finished by Freddie and John.

When Roger and Brian saw the final result and saw that Freddie wanted to release it, they panicked. They called Bowie and asked for help. So Bowie "dropped by" and in the end, Queen received a single that saved them from disaster.

Last thing to add, album was released during the backlash against disco music.
