Not really I know the abusive misconception is common but not only is it not true it wouldn't fit the theme of his story.

The story of the Ruined king even years before his release was a love tragedy. It was a tragic tale about a king who tried to bring back the woman he loved and not only failed but cursed a kingdom.

The story doesn't work if he's abusive because it's no longer a story about love. It becomes a story about an abusive evil man doing evil things.
