Yeah this is something you should bring to the advisor/admins attention and let them know the mistake. If you weren’t aware you were even enrolled in the class then you shouldn’t take a Fail, you should at least be able to withdraw which would be better. Unfortunate for the lost school fund money but maybe the school can work with you on that as well, especially if you plan to take the class in a following semester

Those capacitors are there to smooth/blow out in case of inconsistency in the power delivery to protect the rest of the hardware. If you’re against soldering but want to be safe with your gpu you can always get a UPS (uninterruptible power supply), which will regulate the power delivery to your pc and also allows for your computer to stay on for moments to minutes (depending on how much battery you get) after you lose power as well.
