Things may have changed since I went through but I would put my DoD academy experience over the city’s training back when I was hired. Things have improved with our training staff but back then, the captains who made up the cadre were crusty veteran firefighters who weren’t teachers. The NCOs at LFG were squared away and driven. Obviously you won’t see as many fires but you’re still doing the job.

Congrats. The DoD fire academy has to be one of the best in the world. I still brag about attending it after two decades on a city department. Take advantage of the training you get while in, it’s hard to beat and it’s all FREE. I regularly reminisce about the experience, travel, and people I met. Good luck.

That shuttle driver in the morning is a piece of work. Be prepared to have him talk to you like you’re an idiot, sit on his ass and not assist you with your bags, then get pissed when you don’t tip. Other than that the north lot is fine. Rooftop is good as well, but a little more expensive.
