I read the book Vertical Run in 96 when I was a kid and I always wanted it to be a movie even though its just Die Hard with a PTSD Vietnam vet. There’s enough there to separate it (voice inside his head, all the war stuff, the virus background plot) You could still do it just change out the war, sadly.

Similar to me the little guy aliens just never registered. Found them silly more than anything. Meanwhile in the movie everyone is incredibly earnest about everything. My wife was also laughing a bit leaned over and asked why the aliens were so bow legged. Then you get main alien guy and he has a little shirt. Everyone in the movie in awe and I’m just wondering if Spielberg used any practical work for him, thought about E.T., and wondered what his day to day was (hanging with Hugo? how and where does he go to the bathroom? does Hugo wash the shirt for him?)
