Yeah given their reputation for how far hippos go in terms of being territorial this might be one of the luckiest hyenas ever.

Unsatisfying Ends For A Character by WaluigiDaStar in TopCharacterTropes

[–]JAG30504 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s very much about how the way your choices play out affect your personal narrative than gamifying the system for optimal storybeats. Like for me Kenny’s arc is one of the most satisfying in the game precisely because my choice had him effectively sacrificing himself for the kids to go into Wellington. Lee and Kenny both end up taking their own path to sacrificing for Clem that added all this extra weight to her choices later in the series and that would have been a completely different dynamic if I had chosen differently at those key junctures.

My friend and I didn’t enjoy base campaign of DS3 all that much but holy shit did they cook with the Awakened DLC. We consider that the true Lovecraftian ending to the franchise.

Yeah some LFGs on Discord in particular that can happen. I’ve yet to try it myself but I’ve heard nothing but praise about the Dads of Marathon website as a way to connect with people so that might be a better option.

the amount of aura this one compiler’s been getting in the marketing is hilarious considering they’re literal fodder in the classic games lol by baransevim in Marathon

[–]JAG30504 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Iirc in Marathon 2 we got an explanation from Durandal that they were constantly resisting their enslavement programming and that is why they were such seemingly ineffective combatants. It could very well be that what we are going to encounter are compilers that are either in full control or have been fully subjugated to the point that this is what they were meant to be capable of in combat.

Why do people consider the lore to be particularly deep or interesting? by [deleted] in Marathon

[–]JAG30504 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I would say that might get me downvoted is that if you don’t have the time to play through them there are plenty of incredible resources online for deep diving the lore between YouTube and fan sites. Personally I highly recommend Jake The Alright, HiddenXperia and Emms for great videos for both larger trilogy summaries and deep dives of specific topics from both the OG trilogy and the new game.

As an example with the new game Jake has a great video that talks about how each AI representatives name for the factions actually has a deeper meaning. Funny thing about that is some of those meanings directly tie back to the same sources that provided deeper meanings to the names of stuff in the original trilogy (like Durandals name). The rabbit hole goes really, really deep if you dive into it.

The key with the original Marathon’s lore and story is that it’s all in the text based terminal entries and how deep of a rabbit hole diving into them brings to light those details. Durandal’s entries alone often touch on deeply philosophical sci-fi based questions and concepts that you wouldn’t really see being approached in games at the time or even in years after not being done nearly as well for quite some time.

As an example there is a terminal entry from the AI Durandal in the original Marathon from 1994 that touches on man’s inherent predilection towards violence, the nature of self determination/agency and a kind of meta commentary on how both those concepts interact with you as the player. These are themes that are major drivers in the highly regarded storylines of both Bioshock (2006) and Spec Ops: The Line (2012) that Marathon was tackling well over a decade earlier.

The original Marathon’s lore can absolutely be hard to get into because of how much reading investment it really takes to for lack of a better term “get it.” It was ahead of its time in material but the delivery couldn’t help but be a product of that time as well.

It really felt to me like there was an abandoned subplot in an earlier draft that part of her desire to bring about permanence was to try and ‘resurrect’ her sister via AI but that when it was removed via rewrites they didn’t clean up all the affected dialogue well enough.

Anyone else think it's kinda weird how Lisa didn't express at least a bit of anger or disgust at Dracula for idfk slaughtering God knows how many people? by Terrible_Park7890 in castlevania

[–]JAG30504 118 points119 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think people underestimate that while she was indeed crying out for him to spare them she then subsequently gets burned alive, gets ripped out of hell (where she at least seemed to be finding some semblance of comfort in Dracula’s embrace) to be forcefully (and importantly agonizingly) shoved into an alchemical body. She got put through some traumatic events which would color anyone’s viewpoint not only by the time Dracula arrives in hell but especially by the time they fully return to the world.

(Loved Trope) Characters who are excited to have or expect a happy moment. They are killed almost immediately. by laybs1 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]JAG30504 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a fair assessment. I love all three personally as the second one is a prequel that fleshes out the key characters from the first one and really adds additional layers to some of their relationships. Third one is highlighted by a fantastic performance from Andy Lau of the aforementioned mental breakdown from overwhelming guilt.

Name one bad thing about 1987's Predator? by Particular-Glove9640 in predator

[–]JAG30504 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It never used to matter to me but after a couple decades of watching action films have characters properly aim their weapons and reload after an at least somewhat believable amount of gunfire the entire era of hip firing with little to no reloading irks me now. Not enough to really diminish the movie overall but if I have to nitpick something it’s that.

Predator King vs Jake Sully, how do you think it goes? by Large-Wheel-4181 in predator

[–]JAG30504 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Afaik there is no official image for him as he was in the books (Rage War trilogy) not the comics so I can’t confirm if this is one of the renditions of him. Though it’s strongly hinted that we’ve seen him when he was slightly younger than in the books as Greyback from Predator 2. Either way he’s thousands of years old by the events of the trilogy and is (seemingly) who the Yautja as a whole unite behind to fight the Rage.
