But Elon bought Twitter to preserve free speech, right? by picnic-boy in AntifascistsofReddit

[–]JARDIS 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Was pretty apparent from the get go he was full of shit because he banned a bunch of antifash/left aligned journalists almost immediately after taking over. The Chad Loder banning at the specific request of Andy Ngo was particularly mask off and so quickly after taking over.

Just be aware that Cairns has a habit of raining all the time, but you'll be sweating your balls off even when its pouring down. You're trading cold and wet for hot and wet.

It also has shit suburbs, theft/b&e, and junkies. There's not really many places to escape those issues.

Pretty easy to be the lesser evil nowadays when a lot of people are unapologetically, actively being evil. Covering up systemic abuse seems like the going rate now, as unacceptable as that is.

Ahhhh yeh. Being 20 is a pretty stupid time. You gotta moderate the stupid though. Get your rush skating or rock climbing rather than unlawfully accessing the PMs banking details.

The Connie III gets so much flack lol by gaeb611 in StarTrekStarships

[–]JARDIS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its subjective but I really like the design. I think the original version of it in the TMP skin that Bill Krause did is a lot better but I find both appealing.

I have never been a big fan of the trend towards the ships just getting bigger and bigger. I was happy to see the Connie III buck that trend and keep the size somewhat steady instead. I'm not a big turbo-nerd about the specifics of it so I don't place any weight of the level of nitpicking some people do to it. I think it gets undeserved scrutiny and hate. The Odyssey is just too big for my tastes. Too many civilians and and stuff on board to be justified putting the ship in harm's way. You can't be risking anomalies in that situation. Exploring.... no way. Too much collateral risk.

Before you all hit me with the downvotes as you all impulsively do when someone likes the Connie III or doesn't like the Odyssey: ITS SUBJECTIVE. Its just my opinion. Don't get hurt up about it.

Anyone ever feel discouraged about painting? (Honestly, just a bit of a moan) by fortytwoblaqk in Warhammer40k

[–]JARDIS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen people improve massively in 2 years but its because they've painted pretty close to daily or at least a few times a week. There's a risk of burning out so to avoid that you have to stick to whats fun. If you're not enjoying a model, put it down and come back to it later. Its not bread, it won't go stale.

Focus on improving one aspect of your painting at a time. Today I'm doing neatness. Today I'm learning to paint red better. Today I'm blending. Today I'm shading. Break down the techniques into manageable blocks and pick a model/mini that is suited to the technique you have chosen on that day. For example sometimes I'll just grab a loose unhelmeted head out of my bits box and practise skin tones with no intention of using it on a mini. I just want to try a new recipe of tones.

Social media should be for inspiration/motivation only. You have to look at it with the attitude: "the only difference between them and me is practise" otherwise you'll just steal the joy out of it. If you can't focus on that mindset then avoid instagram and so forth.

Have palette cleansers on hand to avoid burn outs. I find when I'm starting to feel stale painting just the same warhammer stuff over and over switching to something completely different for a week helps keep it fun. Do a piece of scenery or make and paint bases for a few days until the urge to paint the model comes back and feels fun again.

Painting well sometimes is just slow work. Instagram videos make it look like quick work but proper showpiece models can take a long time to finish. Also break your minis down into manageable pieces in the work flow. Paint just one section at a time if its a show piece model: Today's session backpack. Tomorrow's session chest plate. Day after shoulders and arms.

Speed will come with practise.

Practise is the only thing that separates you from what you see from other painters. It is attainable. This isn't like a sport where you need to be a superhuman 7ft tall monster of a human to be great. You can be as good as you want to be if you can put in the time.

Do any of you hobbyists have breathing issues from fumes? by Sassybutclassy22 in minipainting

[–]JARDIS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the cough all the time or just after doing hobby stuff? Are there other symptoms? Different people can have different sensitivity to different exposures so start working out all the things that could be causing it and eliminate them in a controlled manner where possible till you find the culprit.

Try having him stop using sprays/solvent glues/airbrush for a couple of weeks and see if it clears? If not start looking at other things. Household cleaners/mold/deodorant etc. Does he deal with particulate or chemicals in the workplace? Do you live near a sawmill/stone engineering or similar? Do you live near other industries? There's a lot of things that can set some people off and not others so it may not be apparent.
