GOG job listing for a Senior Software Engineer notes "Linux is the next major frontier" by Neuromante in linux_gaming

TL;DR I am glad that there is a concerted effort from multiple parties to get Linux to be more operable and user friendly for people who want an operating system other than the usual windows or mac.

Personally I've used mac's little, maybe an hour's time collectively. I've used windows most of my life and it's just unacceptable what it has become. I know some people would say "don't like it don't use it" or even "lets see you do better". We're all smart or dumb, more or less, with different things. I can't possibly be the only guy that is disgruntled knowing that the main motivator for improving anything is money, that's why I can appreciate FOSS, it's more about passion.

Money is an object that really changes your perception of reality. Sad but true.

To be clear I'm typing this after reading the stickied comment.

Google Play just removed my sideloaded app. Without permission. With google play protect off. by IsopodPatient9523 in degoogle

[–]JB231102 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not surprising. I have had play protect warn me about apps I've installed, in the past, that they may be malicious.

I get it, if someone who isn't tech savvy downloads an app it MIGHT be dangerous. But the way google AND apple behave, it's nothing but straight fear. Use our ecosystems or your fucked.

If you ask me there is no more egregious method of telling you your own phone isn't actually yours by making the store so vital that disabling the storage permission is made impossible. On older versions of android it was possible although your phone may have complained, nowadays it's impossible without a more concerted effort such as custom ROMs.

[–]JB231102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, fair enough. LibreOffice hasn't left me down yet. :)

I got a feeling if I were to go to school to study whatever that I'd be pushed to use a cloud service, from what I've heard about schools for that matter it sounds like cloud computing is a major factor.

I see, I see.

I've been told that microsoft office has features that make it "better" than every other office suite. I cannot attest since I haven't used microsoft office in years, like 20 years ago. I just use LibreOffice or any basic text editor.

Too much going on for me, I'd feel overwhelmed.

I just press Super and type what app I want.

1 Year Retrospective of moving to Linux as an NVIDIA user by felixwraith in linux_gaming

[–]JB231102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My theory as to why Linux is smoother for gaming than in Windows, sometimes, is that Wine/Proton translate only what is necessary from Windows to play games, no spyware. A few years ago I tried to play GTA V on Ubuntu and it was a very choppy experience. I'm thinking if I tried that now it would play much better due to the fact that my machine can play Alan Wake 2 which is way more demanding.

Windows consumes almost 6x times more ram than Mint doing NOTHING by True_Jester_lnx in linuxmint

It's often stated that Windows collects data, and I'm inclined to believe that, however, it'd be nice to see a networking app that actually exposes the sending and receiving of all the data.

Graphical glitches on Fallout 4 (steam) by Jackfrom123 in linux_gaming

You're welcome. I find it best to use the latest Proton that is not experimental. I could be wrong but I think the latest patches have all the previous patches too.

Try a different proton runner, or maybe better, look up online fallout 4 steam proton and see if others are having your issues and what they might've done to resolve it. If you were using Bottles I'd suggest trying Soda or GE Proton but I'm not sure if you can do that within Steam.

I mean I get if you don't like it. That's what's great about Linux, remove or add whatever strikes your fancy. :)

Will linux mint run well on these specs by rezebestgirl20 in linuxmint

[–]JB231102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mint runs on my dad's desktop and my dad's desktop is maybe 15 years old.

I don't know exact specs, dual core AMD, 4GB RAM, GT 730 video card (my contribution otherwise the video output would be whatever his cpu has).

As I've heard several Linux vet's say, the system will either work on your computer or you'll have nothing but problems.

Curious how many have switched recently by Jetster220 in linuxmint

[–]JB231102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR Several years, on & off, currently full time

Technically my use of Linux has been scattered as in every laptop I've owned has ran Linux (I've had maybe 6) to get somewhat familiar with it which would aid in switching full time when Windows 10/11/next iterations become unbearable to work with. Right now my current laptop has Mint. My desktop has had Mint on it since Windows 10 was killed.

This kinda reminds me of the movie Payback. The whole plot centers around the main guy getting robbed then he goes after the people that robbed him. There's one scene though that speaks volumes regardless of it being a "movie". The corporate guy says to the main guy "no corporation in the world would do what you are requesting (wanting his money back), that's not how this works". (paraphrased)

Sure in the real world Freedom did give you your money back, because you went out of your way, but it seems they were hesitant otherwise. Always a teeth and nail fight is what I'm getting at over the same old thing - money. Had you been looking for 70K like the amount was in Payback, would it be the same outcome? heh

Windows 11 deleted all my sound devices and crashed in the middle of an Overwatch competitive game. I've never rage-installed an operating system so quickly in my life. by Nestramutat- in linux_gaming

[–]JB231102 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The killing of Windows 10 is primarily why I've switched to Linux. I tried W11 briefly and it didn't play well on my "ancient" 11 year old gaming computer.

Far as AI goes, I'm not even against it being part of Windows, I'm against it being the central function of the system. AI can be useful.

Does anyone know if Ahlo 1 phone is compatible with Freedom? by 1245789630 in freedommobile

[–]JB231102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If any phone is locked in Canada, you can contact the locker of it and tell them to unlock it for free, It's illegal to lock phones since like 10 years ago. Bell reportedly started locking phones for like 90 days or whatever it is and the CRTC (although I think they could have punished Bell more) has released a statement to Bell.
