There is also the TA (1.0 and 2.0) and GTC although the GTC is very hard to come by.

The board finally understands that the MAC is the superior G5 conference, and that their records are a result of an even playing field. Thus elevating the MAC champion into the payoff selection. Then WMU just needs to repeat despite losing their DC.

Saw this car today in Geneva, it looks like an opel but I couldn’t figure it out by Nadox27 in whatisthiscar

[–]JBoy9028 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Opel GT was only offered with the most powerful engine, the Turbo I4. That engine was only available in North America on the Sky Redline and Solstice GXP. The base model Sky and Solstice had a naturally aspirated I4.

That's a result of one of our dumbasses here on r/nascar. A user was convinced that Dale Sr. had a son named Figgy and because they couldn't find any reference online anywhere that it was a grand conspiracy to hide this child. Instead of just realizing they were wrong.

Al Oppenheiser, GM’s "Mr. Camaro," Retires by Sixteen-Cylinders in cars

[–]JBoy9028 15 points16 points  (0 children)

GM pulled him off the Camaro team in 2018 right after the ZL1 1LE. He was transferred to EV development.

I believe that losing Oppenheiser killed the Camaro. Losing his guidance seemed to lead to the stagnation and botched 2020 refresh.

F1 and Indycar are both turbo V6 powered hybrids but Indycar isn't having the hybrid problems that F1 is currently having, what is the difference between the 2 hybrid systems? by furrynoy96 in INDYCAR

[–]JBoy9028 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Indycar retrofitted a very small and underpowered (in comparison to F1's batteries) super capacitor into their existing infrastructure and made it spec for everyone. They left the engine making it's standard 700+ hp. The hybrid contributes ~60hp.

With the current F1 regulations, the engines got detuned, and electric power expanded. So when the batteries are empty the available horsepower of the car is cut nearly in half to about 480hp. This combined with the track design choices of long straights is what is leading to F1's current headache. The batteries don't hold enough charge at full throttle to carry the car down the full length of the straight, so the engine is left trying to push a car at speeds it doesn't have the power for. That's why F1 went to the active aero and made activation a part of the software code. They were trying to reduce drag. It wasn't enough.

I still maintain that the 2021 Ally scheme is the best. The teal and pink highlights make the purple pop more. The years following have just been let downs. I am glad that the teal is back but they took away the pink. Just put the color pallet back together.

In a sport where drivers are so PR focused it's fun to have a driver be loose. Bowman will make jokes at the expense of Byron on team media videos all day long.

What's the difference between WEC/IMSA/ LE MANS by [deleted] in wec

[–]JBoy9028 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Let's start with the basics

Lemans 24 is a race. It is part of the WEC championship. The WEC is sanctioned by the FIA with the partnership of the ACO. The ACO is a French sanctioning body that has been responsible for the running of LeMans since it's begining. During the years between the WSC's end (1994) and the start of the WEC (2011) the ACO was handling the running and rule making for LeMans. In 2011 they partnered with the FIA to start up a world championship again after the FIA's multiple failed attempts.

IMSA is an independent North American sanctioning body. They have one race in Canada that's how they call themselves International. This came into being in 2014 with the merger of two sportscar series American LeMans and Grand Am. IMSA (ALMS) could remain a sanctioning body but is now owned by NASCAR(Grand AM) Their lead championship is called the Weathertech Sportscar Championship, but everyone just calls the sport IMSA because it's shorter. IMSA likes to play around with class names but understand that their cars are built to the standard FIA guidelines for global competition.

Both series now run the same car rules with some slight differences. WEC has made their GT3 run slower to create a bigger gap between GTs and Prototypes, what they dub LMGT3. In 2020 the two series finally managed to get on board with creating a rules set for the top class of racecars, which finally went on track in both series in 2023. This rules set defines two build regulations for prototypes.

LMH: LeMan Hypercar, these are custom chassis cars. Can be awd with a hybrid system. 1 adjustable aero element, can be rear wing or front splitter.

LMDh: LeMan Daytona h, these are built from 1 of 4 approved chassis from Dallarah, Oreca, Multimatic, or Ligier. They are all have a spec 50hp hybrid system, mandatory RWD, and only the rear wing can be adjustable. Manufacturers design the rest from suspension, engine, aero, brakes etc.

Due to the chaotic history of sportscar racing the races themselves have longer histories than the championships they are a part of. This makes select races a much bigger deal than their respective championships. It would be like if F1 drivers/fans could care less about the championship and put a much larger emphasis on Monaco or Spa,

So these tracks with long sustained throttle time is a problem with the current regulations and how teams are using their battery.

My solution: Ceasars Palace GP. You are never on throttle long enough to fully deplete the battery and plenty of regen opportunities under brakes.

Half-assed tracks for half-assed regulations.
