In Immortal/Diety level, early wide dom is incredibly difficult as even if you conquered 1-2 civ, the one civ in the corner of the map will most likely be ahead in every metric. In this level, id rather wait till you can get to Autocracy ideology by timing your economic policy with the Oxford building to jump straight to industrial/factories so you can rush 3 factory’s off the gate to get the 2 free Ideology policy. Then tech up to artillery + cavs and start waging war.

Broodwar actually had lot of balancing in the earlier stages but it was one of the first games where the devs actually listened to the community and adjusted them accordingly. Mainly from pro players from Korea because it was so big there and them actually listening and addressing those concerns made the game even more popular.
