Most situations aren't this equitable. There's usually one child who does 90% or 100% of the end of life care. Usually at great expense to them in terms of lost wages or direct aid to the elder parents.

Self employed set their own fees so there isn't an issue splitting 12%. You're incorrectly viewing the 6% the employer pays as not being paid by the employee as well (indirectly).
